ATI Finally Releases Crossfire

FormFactorFormFactor At the core of forgotten
edited September 2005 in Science & Tech
Hexus is reporting on Crossfire, ATI's answer to nVidia's SLI technology.

Apparently a single nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX can beat two Radeon x850s in Crossfire. The Hexus site is currently at a crawl due to the popularity of this story, so details are fairly scarce at the moment.

DJ, you might try this if that one isn't available to you yet:

And basically, if I've read it right, the Crossfire currently is just a solution for the currently available core (that drives the X8xx series). The newer one (the 5xx) is the one that should go toe-to-toe with the 7800 series.

The long and short of it - Ya gotta love competition!

I agree, it will be nice to have some alternatives. It may not be apples to apples yet, but choice is never a bad thing. I'm sure there will be some future tweaks in platform to overcome some of the weaknesses, time will tell I suppose :)

I'm actually very dissapointed with ATi.

Not only did they release Crossfire a year too late, their video cards have been sub-par since the 9700 pro.

I dont agree with that.. Up until the release of the 7800 series of cards, the X800's and X850's outperformed the 6800's in just about anything other than OpenGL. The 9800 series of cards also outperformed the FX5900 series of cards, in just about every category. I certainly would not consider those cards 'sub-par'. They have been good competitors to say the least, if not superior in many areas.

My biggest gripe with ATI is their inability to supply their cards to market. That is by far their biggest problem area IMO.

EDIT: Looks like the 1600x1200@60Hz is a limitation with current gen cards only. Future cards not be limited in this way.

Forget two video cards, look what the platform will do.
    Some real serious OC power.
Now if the mobo comes in at a nice price point......

I meant to include the 9800 series with the 9700s, but as far as the x800 cards go...

The 6800 series was out way before the x800s hit shelves, not only that, the x850 didn't hit stores until what, early '05???

Not only that, the x850 series isn't even a significant boost from the 6800 series.

They also need to make some damn Linux drivers with 3D Support.

But seriously, when the 5xx comes out to go "toe to toe" with the 7800, nVidia will have already released a new and better card...

ill tell you this the 9800 pro is the best damn card ive owned hands down. it was far supirior than i imagined it would have been when i got my 1st one :) and they are so good i got another one. i still HIGHLY recomend the 9800 pro, and i bet the x850 series and the like are just as nice. i like the drivers better than nvidias too.

ATI is playing catch up and it's a simple as that. Remember when Nvidia launched their Nforce mother boards and the dreaded 5XXX series cards? THe mother boards where great but their cards where just poo. ATI is taking on more now but they are doing it well even if it's late. As long as the compitition pushes prices down and I can afford some hi quality gamming for less keep it comming.
