edited December 2011 in Science & Tech
When I try to install VB6 or Visual studio I always get this error message and it wont install. This is Exacly what the orror says:

"ERROR while configuring ODBC drivers"

ODBC's SQLInstallDriverManager failed.

The reason I posted in the emergency help forum is because
I actualy do need to get this to work realy soon for my programming course and also I cant find any help for this anywhere and google doesnt search anything on these erros.

Please help

    First try doing the MDAC update (Microsoft Data Access Components):

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=78cac895-efc2-4f8e-a9e0-3a1afbd5922e&DisplayLang=en

    Download and install that, reboot, and then see if it works.

    Do you have to use VS6? Can you get your hands on a modern version from school or something?

    I tried installing the MDAC update and I got the error Fatal setup does not support installing on this operating system when installing it. Are you sure its for win xp?

    It seems like you have a corrupt ODBC stack. Can you try installing VB6 using the custom install and deselecting anything that says "data access components"? Are you going to need ODBC for your projects this semester?

    Dont worry im just gonna give up. Nothing I can do will work and I could format but that would be too much of a pain to do. I have had vb6 working in the past on xp but for some reason it wont work anymore.

    Sounds like you might have some hard drive problems, or perhaps even a memory error. Does any other program act strange or crash randomly?

    No thats definatly not it my hard drives in perfect condition. I think there might be a problem with one of the system files or something. I was thinking it might be because I have .NET Framework 2.0 beta?

    i mean, it could be. I'm still leaning towards a problem with you system's ODBC drivers though. I don't know enough about the ODBC stack to know which products include updates for ODBC. I almost wish you could temporarily install VB.net just to see if it works (or at least updates ODBC) and then uninstall it and try installing vb6 again :(

    Well I also found out that windows updates wouldnt install because I was getting an "access is denied" error when it tried to install windows installer 3.1. It also did this with Service Pack 2. I searched for days and hours finding info on how to fix this problem and I tried all the methods of fixing it which didnt work including microsofts solution. Just as I was about to give up and format I stumbled upon another method. This one required me to make a cmd file with some commands and download Subinacl.exe from Microsofts website. What it did was reset the User permissions in the registry. It turned out that even though I was an Admin user it still had blocked me from certain registry keys because of some glitch that Windows has. Well this also turned out to be the same with Visual Studio 6. The installer couldnt update the registry. Well Im Bloody happy now because I fixed all my problems. Thanks guys for you help too.

    Well... I'm the kind of person that can work backwards vastly better than forwards, and I'm wondering if someone would be able to send me a couple of quick made programs that I could learn off of because I can't figure anything out on the damn thing. If someone can help, my e-mail address is morris_mclean AT cablerocket DOT com. Thanks for your time.

    Zombie: I altered the format of your email address so the Spambots won't get you. Anyone who wants to help should be able to figure it out. :)

    Splinter6,
    What did you have to change with subinacl? I have the same messages from vb6 install.

    Follow this to exact detail http://www.mikeangelo.com/Lists/OnLine%20WEB%20Support/DispForm.aspx?ID=8

    IF you dont know how to make a .cmd file then rightclick make new .txt file then go to tools>folder options and unselect hide extensions for known file types then rename the .txt to .cmd then rightclick and go edit then paste what it says to paste in the guide.

    If you dont know how to make a .cmd file, you need to make a .txt file and rename the .txt extention to .cmd and edit it in notepad.

    still dont know what to do? then pm me again.

    Dear Friend

    I did everything that you recommended to me, following all the steps listed in the web site, but the system still shows the same error ("ODBC´s SQLINSTALLDRIVERMANAGER FAILED").

    When I was fixing the register entries, I noticed the following problems:

    HKEY_CLASSE_ROOT\CLSID{A037D427_EDED_46BD_8EF4}
    HKEY_CLASSE_ROOT\INTERFACE{91493Y69_5A91_11CF_8700_00AA0060263B}

    I really need to solve this problem to start my Master Degree project using VB.

    I look forward to hear from you.

    Thanks.

    Maybe you didnt follow it properly because its a 100% working solution, thats is guarunteed.

    If I were you, I would back up all my important stuff, make sure I have all the drivers I need such as motherboard drivers etc and format my hd and reinstall windows.
