Video driver(s) issue

As documented elsewhere, I've had some problems getting HL2 to play on my system. I get freezing, I get disembodied heads, I get artifacts. I tried to play with the drivers, and only succeeding in making my system far worse.

Before I continue, I'm using Radeon 9800 (128mb, not overclocked or modified) and an MSI Neo2 Platinum mobo (VIA chipset).

I tried changing my AGP to CPU bridge driver. Then, the screen would black out on me randomly - no input at all, no response at all. So, I tried to put the old drivers back. Now, I'm getting a funky striping issue as shown in the picture below. It's vertical stripes of horizontal lines that flicker. They intensify when I scroll and kinda get "stuck" until I open a new window. As I'm typing this, I'm not seeing as much of it actually. It varies in severity. I'm also still having the blackout issue.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled AGP to CPU drivers twice, and I uninstalled my Catalyst driver (5.8) and upgraded to 5.9 with no change in the problem.

I'm really, really close to just buying a new video card and/or mobo I'm so sick of these problems with my system. Anyone have a suggestion? :(

Your system is bunk, man. That's a hardware problem. If you are still having the same kind of problems you were having at the LAN, you either have a bad video card, bad mobo, or bad power supply :(

The frustrating thing is that it isn't "still" a problem... It was a problem, it was fixed for two months after mondi helped me out, and now it's back again because I messed with the drivers.

I agree this config is a POS though. :(

are you sure it's a driver thing? you could always try the "omega" drivers that are floating around the net.

however, my guess is gpu core overheating or failing. 9800s are notorious for running hot with stock cooling.

it might explain why the system worked for a little bit. maybe the gpu hsf was nudged into place and made decent contact, but over time, perhaps through moving the pc around, the gpu hsf slowly inched out of place. you could try re-seating it w/ some as5. or you could try to find a used artic cooling silencer on ebay for $10.

what exactly did mondi do to temporarily fix this problem?

There was some issue with finding the correct AGP -> CPU driver I think... the board is a weird model and it took 3 hours to find the right now and get it working. Of course that's the one I overwrote without thinking... :o

I've found that when the video crashes, it's actually a system crash - networking stops as well. NewEgg, here I come... :o
