Uploading to ftp

I want to share some large files using ftp but I'm not quite clear on the concept. I have a client but I don't know how to use it. Seems overly complicated. I've looked it up on google and such but the sites Ive looked at are not helpful. There's always an assumption that you know stuff that I don't apparently know. How or where can I get started with this? And are there free places to upload to?

Well FTP is actually one of the easiest things to work with if you are wanting to upload files to a FTP site, such as under a web domain, you need to access your ftp folder and either drag and drop the file in and let it upload, or save it to the folder. I use a program called Smart FTP, this program is very much drag and drop, and to set it up you only need to know the FTP address and your user name and password, you can find Smart FTP at www.download.com . When it comes to uploading files that are large you just want to make sure you have enough room for whatever file you’re putting up. Most FTP host only allow so much data to be posted in the fold, usually 2 gig's but it all depends on your web Host, than you have to take inconsideration Bandwidth, Web hosts also usually give you a limit on what you can transfer per month. I guess the key is making sure you do not run out of space or bandwidth and you’re good to go.

You usually have to get a domain name and you can upload it to your own site. and if you get a good webhost you can have anonymous ftp access which means anyone or anyone that you let can upload or download files from the ftp server.

OR you can set up a computer to be your ftp server for free. You just have to have a static ip address then you would type in something like.

    ftp://192.1.0.1

then it would connect if you have setup the pc to do file sharing correctly, and it is allowed through the firewall and the server is set up to accept you.

kind of complicated for me though I hope someone can make it easier to explain.
