Laptop power problem

edited October 2005 in Hardware
My Dell inspiron 5150 will not charge or power from charger.
Have had it checked out and was told problem with internal board.
Have bought a new battery but the only way I can charge these is
to charge them in a friend's dell laptop.
Was told could cost $800 to fix.
Wondering if there is any other way to charge the batteries externally
rather than in laptop.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks.

I did not want to let your post laguish unanswered. Unfortunately, I was not able to find an external charger for your model of Dell. That does not mean there absolutely isn't one or one can't be made-up. It just looks like there is no convenient market solution.

Someone else may respond with a solution or discovery. My post will bump yours to attention again. Hopefully there will be a better response.

does the light on the power brick come on at all?

also try moving the connection, when pluged into the laptop, around and see if the charging light will come on at all.

if the motherboard is still under warranty you will need to return it. if not then you can consider the following:
1.You will have to remain friends with the guy that has the dell
2.You can send the laptop off for repair(expensive)
3.You can have a look to see the problem without damaging the laptop. Some dell laptops have dosdy soldering on the power inlet so the internal charger does not work. Of it is a circuitry problem then you will be better off with option 1
    good luck
