Dr Watson: urgent help needed

edited August 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi, first post here so sorry if i'm doing anything wrong.

First up i'm running XP Pro with Service Pack 2.

My Problem is with Dr Watson Debugger.
It occurs when i open a folder containing any video files, before i run any files in the folder i get a hour glass and then nothing happens. When i bring up the task manager it has dr watson on the list, when i close this program it closes the folder containing the videos.

Basically this means i cannot run any video files and as i'm doing an editing course at college this is a BIG problem.

Now after some google searching, i found a microsoft page about how to disable it, so i did.
Now what i get is an error message instead, which then closes the folder!
So same problem really.

Heres what the error message says exactly:

Explorer.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x022c3397" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "written".

i then click to terminate as its my only option!

Any help would be great as i really don't know what to do, prior to this problem i had just run scan disk and a disk cleanup.

Max

You most likely are having this problem because Windows likes to create a thumbnail view of video files. For large files this can cause your system to hang.

    See if this helps:

Download the attached program (shexview.zip), unzip it, then run shexview.exe.

Look for the extentsion named "Video Thumbnail Extractor" and disable it.

Let us know how it goes. :)

Many thanks! I've had this same problem and I followed your advice and disabled the Video Thumbnail Extractor. No more frozen screens!

The fact that you're getting a memory error likely means that either you have failing memory, or a driver is trying to access a part of memory which has been reserved for something else.

To answer the question about the physical state of your RAM, give Memtest-86 a pass or two. If you find no problems there, we'll move on to the second issue. :)
