My Caller ID Spoofed?

FormFactorFormFactor At the core of forgotten
edited October 2005 in Science & Tech
Just a few minutes ago I recieved a phone call, that my caller ID read as originating from my own home phone number. When I picked up there was nothing on the line but silence.

I am thinking it was another telemarketer, but how the hell did they do that?

Is it possible to spoof caller ID like that?

There used to be a trick where you could dial your own number followed by a bunch of '9's or something, and when you hung up, it would call you back after a bit of a delay. I'm not sure if that works any more, but it used to

And to think someone may have even paid 5 cents per minute to do that to you too :hrm:

Its also possible for users of some VOIP providers to do this. Until recently, on a UK provider you could literally add any number to your account to be presented as your CLI when you called anyone from your VOIP line. It was meant to be used so you could enter your landline or mobile number so people could recognise it was you calling (the provider didn't offer an incoming service so if you didn't enter a number the ID was 'unknown') however there were big concerns about people entering banks phone numbers etc and calling people up...
OK thats not a telemarketer, but for any small time(and up) telecoms provider it seems possible to send any CLI to the big networks to forward on to the called party.
So if you get an unethical telecoms provider who would blindly accept calls from a telemarketing company with any CLI (allbeit the output of the autodialler), it is more than possible.
