hi i had a usb modem for broadband on my laptop, its an ntl modem and i installed it through the cd as normal. when i went to use it via ethernet, i assumed it would just plug in and work straight away but it didnt. so i got the ntl cd and tried to install it through that. it came up with an error saying i had 2 or more NICs installed for internet access and could i diable/remove them. when i went into device manager, i had the following:
USB Cable Modem 351000
USB Cable Modem 351000 - Odyssey Network Services Miniport
USB Cable Modem 351000 - Packet Scheduler Miniport
USB Cable Modem 351000 #2 - Odyssey Network Services Miniport
USB Cable Modem 351000 #2 - Packet Scheduler Miniport
USB Cable Modem 351000 #3 - Odyssey Network Services Miniport
USB Cable Modem 351000 #3 - Packet Scheduler Miniport
If i right click USB Cable Modem 351000 then click uninstall then this goes away and also get rid of the next 2 on the list aswell, but when i click any of the others and click uninstall it says cant delete may be required to boot up the computer (which its not)
I cant find any way of deleting them ive tried disabling them which it let me do but the ntl cd still wont let me continue because of the conflict and if i right click the ethernet connection and click repair windows says it cant obtain an ip address
Is there any way to get rid of them i dont want to have to format the laptop but i need to start using ethernet because ive now got a router (ive tried connecting the laptop directly to the modem via ethernet and also through the router and the same happens)
any help appreciated
If that doesn't work, check with your ISP to see if your modem's MAC has been provisioned (I'm assuming you're using cable broadband). If so, then powercycle your network (unplug the power from the modem and router if you have them), connect your ethernet cable, wait 20 seconds, power on the modem first, then after the lights are good on that power on the router.
Check your IP address to. If you're getting a 169.254.x.x ip, repeat the same steps as above, but also unscrew the coax cable to a cable modem.
As long as your NIC is configured correctly, you shouldn't need to install anything or run any network wizards.
Now if you're using DSL, I'm not sure if these steps will work, but they should for cable.
Is the actual modem still plugged in to your USB port when you try to delete it? If not, try plugging it in and then deleting it again. If that doesn't work..
Do you have the option down in the Windows tool bar (by your clock) to right click and stop a removable device? If so, try that, reboot and plug the modem back in. What does it tell you now?
Those are the directions for uninstalling the USB driver. I would try uninstalling all previous versions and start from scratch with a reboot and deleting all temp files.
i already tried plugging it back in and uninstalling it, it gets rid of the first 3 on the list, but wont let me uninstall the others on the list. then i tried pulling the modem out and plugging it back in again, but then windows just auto-detects it and installs it again, adding another 3 to the list. i cant actually find any files or programs related the modem or drivers installed anywhere, the only thing related to it is these items on the list in device manager and i cant delete them. i tried clicking driver details on them and finding the driver file in system32 and deleting it but that didnt work either.
ive also tried looking in msconfig to see if theres anthing in startup related to it but theres nothing there either!
Ok, so when you uninstalled the first 3 did you reboot? It might need to remove some stuff and that's why it's causing the problem.
Also, I'm assuming there's no uninstall on the NTL cd??
If you goto the properties > TCP/IP properties of the ethernet connection does it get the IP and all DNS settings automatically?
Also, have you more than one 'enabled' network connection in network connections? If so, sometimes the 'internet gateway' can get confused, and doesnt know to use the ethernet connection instead of another one which is not active. Disable all connections other than the ethernet one (unless your 1394 firewire port appears here, thats fine). If you do have an 'internet gateway' appearing in network connections, check to see that its using the ethernet connection.
Hi, I know this this thread is years old but I found it on a google search, I'm having the same problem as the guy in this thread but there doesn't seem to be a solution in this thread.

What it is I need to switch my Virgin (NTL) internet connection from usb to ethernet so I can plug the ethernet into a wireless router, but I can't get it to work on ethernet because of the network adapters that I need to remove first.
Is there a software bundle that came with the modem? If so, remove it from the add/remove programs menu and it'll uninstall the miniport drivers. Additionally, in the "Network connections" menu, delete every connection but the one that is built into your computer.

Can anyone help?
thank you
I don't even know what the problem is...

If that makes sense... haha
