[resolved]NO DESKTOP! - shaikhusman

Hello

My emergency is that I have no desktop! When I start my computer, everything runs normally until the Windows XP welcome screen shows up. After that, all I see is my wallpaper with my cursor. That's all. There are no desktop icons or start menu, there's also no system clock at the bottom right hand corner and there is no taskbar!

Please help me because I cannot do anything on my computer.

Thank you.

    Have you tried Safe Mode? :)

    try starting explorer manually.

    ctrl-alt-del

    new task

    explorer.exe

    that should at least start explorer so you can see icons, taskbar etc... but it doens't really solve the underlying problem.

    This is just a WAG, but it happend to me once-

    Can you get your display properties up? Lower your resolution? Uhhh, once I had my display set up for a higher resolution and it drew my icons and Start off the screen.
    :rolleyes:

    :)

    I'm leaning towards corupt profile, spyware, or fubared OS... Try Safe-Mode, if that works, then Spyware is my next thought.

    Before that, try bringing up the Task Manager. On the "Process" tab, is there anything taking up most of the processor?
  • edited October 2005
    Hello

    I tried running in Safe Mode and it does start up normally. I see all the icons and the taskbar. In the task manager, in the processes tab, the thing that is taking up the most Mem Usage is svchost.exe at 20,160 K and the next thing is IEXPLORER.EXE at 19,096 K followed by ewidoguard.exe at 18, 188 K.

    I cannot display my properties or lower my resolution. When I tried running explorer manually, a pop-up comes up saying that "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them."

    Thanks for everything so far.

    Well... some good news then. Try restarting normally and bring up the task manager. List off the major processes (both by processor usage and memory usage). Then restart into Safe Mode WITH network.

    Then follow the steps listed HERE

    This will cleanup spyware and then you can post your log here, we'll look at it and determine if spyware is the problem.

    If there is no spyware, we can try creating a new user account and see if the problem occurs on that account. If the problem does NOT occur, then your profile is corrupt and we can fix that...
    :thumbsup:

    We'll get you through this... or at least narrow it down.

    Hello

    I don't understand what you mean when you say "List off the major processes (both by processor usage and memory usage). Then restart into Safe Mode WITH network." Could you tell me how to do that?

    Thanks a lot :)

    First - Task Manager, second tab (Processes), click on the CPU heading, that sorts that column. Note which application(s) have the highest numbers. Then click on the Mem Usage heading and note which processes are using the most memory.

    Second - Reboot the system and repeatedly tap the F8 key. when the menu for Safe mode appears, select Safe mode with Networking.

    Cool? It can be tough judging the level of computer knowledge, sorry. :thumbsup:

    Hello

    In the task manager, the process with the highest CPU number is System Idle Process with 99. After that, the rest of the processes have 00 as their CPU number. For Mem Usage, IEXPLORER.EXE is first with 25,188 K followed by svchost.exe with 20,280 K.

    I ran both programs, Spybot Search & Destroy as well as Ad-Aware SE Personal in Safe Mode Networking. I also ran HiJackThis in Safe Mode Networking and my HiJackThis logfile is this:

    Hey shaikhusman,

    Thanks for keeping with us... I'm not seeing anything in the log.

    Did adaware or Spybot S&D find anything?

    Have you tried restarting since performing the steps?

    If so and nothing changed, restart in safe mode and create a new user then restart normally and try login with the new user account. Did anything change?

    Hello

    I tried creating a new account in Safe Mode and the same thing still happens. I see the wallpaper with nothing but the cursor. No desktop icons or taskbar.

    Thanks for everything so far.

    SmartFinder
    is a browser hijacker.

    I'm going to refer you to the experts at our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum. They will help you remove it, plus I'm betting they will also fix your desktop problem along the way.

    Good luck! :)

    Sit back and relax... the SVT Team will help you through removing it. I'm sure you can remove it via hijackthis while in safe mode, but I'll let the experts handle the explanation.

    I'll keep an eye on this thread to make sure you get helped. :thumbsup:

    Post the results of AdAware and Spybot S&D. Allow the programs to remove any bad files they find.

    Turn off System Restore, boot in Safe Mode, then use HijackThis to remove these entries:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

    O23 - Service: SmartFinder Uninstall (SmartFinder_Uninstall) - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\Rizwan Shaikh\Desktop\SFUninstaller.exe" service (file missing)

    Reboot, then post a new HijackThis log. :)

    Hello

    I ran both AdAware and Spybot S&D and I wasn't able to save the report for Spybot. It said that it was in the tools option, but I don't think there's one for the free version. I did save the AdAware one. The first set of data is the AdAware scan log and the second set of data is the new HiJackThis logfile after running everything in Safe Mode.

    Hi,

    Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked'

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch
    O23 - Service: SmartFinder Uninstall (SmartFinder_Uninstall) - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\Rizwan Shaikh\Desktop\SFUninstaller.exe" service (file missing)
    ==

    Download CWShredder from here. Open CWShredder and check for updates. Close ALL windows and click 'Fix'
    ==

    Download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
      (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Now, scan with it by clicking 'Scanner' on the left and choosing 'Complete System Scan'
    ==

    Scan your PC with the following:

    Panda Activescan
    Trend Micro: Housecall
    ==

    Post a new HJT log after and tell us how things are :)

    Do you know what PCI TV Card Remote Control Applet is?
    ==

    See if the following works...

    ==

    How are things now?

    Hello

    I think PCI TV Card Remote Control Applet is a program that allows me to watch TV on my computer. I have a TV Tuner, but I haven't used it for a long time. After running Ewido Security Suite, it found 9 infections and it cleaned all of them, but the problem is still the same. No desktop or taskbar or any desktop icons. I know you didn't ask for it, but here's my new HiJackThis logfile, just in case.

    Your log looks clean to me. How long have you had Messenger 3?

    You need to update your computer via Windows Update but I'm not too sure if its a good idea to do it while your still having problems.

    Lets call everyone back in to see what they think.
  • edited October 2005
    Hello

    I would say I've had Messenger 3 since it came out. Anytime a new update comes for it, the pop-up comes out telling me to install the new updated version of Messenger, so I do. I would say it's probably been a month with Messenger 3.

    It looks like this one doesn't want to go away:

    Have you tried disabling System Restore, the deleting it in Safe Mode with HijackThis? :)

    I removed that file in Safe Mode, and also, System Restore was already checked to off in Safe Mode. My new HiJackThis logfile is this:

    O23 - Service: SmartFinder Uninstall
    See if this shows up on your list of Services. If so, disable it, reboot, then cross your fingers. :)

    Hello

    Where do I find the list of Services, and how do I disable it?

    Right-Click on "My Computer", then left-click on "Manage". Go down and hit the + sign next to "Services and Applications", then highlight "Services". You should see a list of them on the right-hand side. :thumbsup:

    Please go here & install ALL critical updates required for your system, including service pack 1a for both XP and IE6.
    Most malware is designed to attack unpatched XP systems - exploiting the available 'holes' - and can bypass third-party protection on an unpatched system. The most that can be done with an unpatched system is put a temporary bandage on it. Your system can potentially be reinfected within minutes of cleaning it.
    Do not install SP2 yet.
