Can't get rid of Trojan.Vundo - jeffschmidt

Hi,

Norton Antivirus is telling me I have Vundo, but Symatech's removal tool says I don't. I've run Ad-Adware and Spybot - Search & Destroy and removed the miscellaneous stuff.

Thanks in advance for your kind help!

    Hi Jeff,

That Vundo trojan can be a real pain. Do you happen to have a program called Winfixer showing up also?

Below is a manual removal procedure originally posted by Crunchie to another forum member with a similar problem. I have modified his instructions to work in your situation
    Crunchie wrote:
Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
    • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
    • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
    • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
    • You will first be presented with a warning.
      It should look like this
    • At this point press enter one time.
    • Next you will see:
    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

        C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnk.dll

[*]Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
      [*] Next you will see:

[*]At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

        C:\WINDOWS\system32\knnmp.*

[*]Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

[*]The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
[*]In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

[*]After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
[*]Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
[*]Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

          Thanks for your quick response!

I got Vundofix, but it didn't go past the spot where I entered the pmnnk.dll filename. I opened the batch file and was able to complete the steps manually, so I can't include the text file :-) The C:\WINDOWS\system32\knnmp.* file(s) were not there.

I started hijack and fixed those things present (the MSEvents object wasn't present.)

Completed the Active scan, which found residue in the registry.

Things seem pretty calm, so maybe it's gone.

          Active scan log:

          Incident Status Location

          Spyware:spyware/virtumonde No disinfected Windows Registry

Hi Jeff, looks like that DLL in question is gone now, which is awesome.

There is still reference to it in the HJT log, so could you please fix the following items:

Once you have those removed, please restart your PC, and run another active scan/ad-aware scan. Post any findings here. I think we are getting very close to the end of this battle now :D

          Thanks,
          Mike

          Mike,

I removed those items, ran hijack and then Active Scan, which still complains about a registry entry.

          Active Scan:

          Incident Status Location

          Spyware:spyware/virtumonde No disinfected Windows Registry

Hi Jeff, good news: your HJT log is now clean.

I'm not too sure about that Activescan find, as its not very specific about where in the registry that 'spyware/virtumonde' entry is. I have found a Virtumonde removal tool from Symantec that you can try.. (see attachment)

Give that tool a try, and let us know if it does the trick.

Other than that, it appears your system is clean

          Hi Jeff,

Here is another suggestion from our SVT moderator Crunchie.. His procedure below will allow us to locate these virtumonde entries and address them manually. Give the tool I sent a try, but if it reports that nothing was found, please follow his below instructions:

Go here http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and download, unzip and run the Registry Search Tool. Type virtumonde in the dialog box. Let it run and after a few minutes, a prompt will appear. Click OK to write the results to Notepad and post them here.

          Best Regards,

          Mike,

I tried the Symantec removal tool (again) and it said it wasn't present. The Registry Search tool turned up no "virtumonde" or "Vundo".

When I came downstairs this morning the computer was sitting obediantly in power save, so things are good.

I learned a lot and will definitely be more vigilent!!

Thanks very much for your help, and pending any other ideas - mark this as "CLOSED!'

          Jeff
