Vundo, can't remove it.

edited December 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
My NOrton Antivirus has the Vundo File Alert permenantly popping up on my desktop from finding this. I read the "how to remove" file they refrence but can't find what they say to look for because the files aren't their with the names or extensions they say. I ran the Symatec FixVundo and FixMonde and those say that the Monde and Vundo aren't on my machine. The "High Risk" Norton popup alert has the file listed as "C:\Windows\AppPatch\utilinfo.dll" and says "Unable to repair this file" "Acess was denied" I tried to close as many programs as possible and delete it but it won't let me. My virus scans and pop up are all up to date. Can someone help me remove this and if I have any other adware on my PC. Thankss alot,
Derrick

I restarted in safe mode, checked off the 6 items and clickedd fix checked. I rescaned and they appeared. I went on the c drive to find them and delete them and couldn't find:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebcb.dll

I then tried to delete this file "C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\utilinfo.dll" and it wouldn't let me because it was in use by "Winlogon" I tried to shut that off and the task manager said it was a critical process it couldn't shut down.

The AWS is a desktop weather program.

Is there a way I can start up in dos and find and delete those files that way...I'm not to familiar with that process though either.

AND Norton keeps telling me that the Vundo is still on my computer.

Heres the log file....I apprciated the help on this annoyance.

Ok...I ran the Vundo in safe mode. It doesn't give me the blue screen of death at the end. I ran HiJack this and killed the processes as directed and they still show up. HOWEVER, I don't have Norton popping up anymore...so thats good. Seems like I'm making progress in the right direction.

Thanks for helping so far, Derrick

          Run the PurityScan uninstaller.
          ==

          Download Ewido Security Suite
          • Install ewido security suite
          • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
            • Install background guard
            • Install scan via context menu
          • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
          • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
            • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
            • Then click on Start Update.
          • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
          • Now, scan with it by clicking 'Scanner' on the left and choosing 'Complete System Scan'
          ==

Post a new HJT log :)
        • edited October 2005
Ok, did that and repeated the steps from the post prior also to try and fix it again. Seems like it's almost all better. No virus scan alerts or pop ups...just a few annoying ones at random from web pages...but better all in all. I ran that virus scan, ad-aware, and spybot search and destroy...... so here's the log.

          Thanks so much, Derrick

I know you've done this but please do it again as there is a new file to input

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
          • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
          • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
          • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
          • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
          • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
            it should look like this
            VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
          • At this point press enter one time.
          • Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
          • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

              C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvv.dll

[*]Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
            [*] Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
[*]At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

              C:\WINDOWS\system32\vvvaw.*

[*]Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

[*]The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
[*]In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

                O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {8DBF02DA-4360-4A7E-BEA1-347B87816327} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvv.dll
                O20 - Winlogon Notify: awvvv - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvv.dll

[*]After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
[*]Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
[*]Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

I too had Trojan Vundo. I tried removing using the Norton Vundo Removal Tool; that did not work.
Then I reboot into Safemode and tried it with Auto Protect off,
it failed as well. Then I ran a few scans using
Norton in Safemode and it did not work.
So then I realized this was beyond my intelligence,
so I called a few places who said they were not supporting Vundo.
I then took it to a few local technicians they too had no success.
So I was almost ready to format my hard drive but I had so much information, which I wanted to keep, and I was hesitant to do so. :bawling:
While doing a Google search I came across TechGuyLive .
                      They claimed to fix Vudno.
Surely enough, in a few minutes
they removed Vundo and I’m now Vundo Free. :D
                      They were so helpful.
                      I originally signed up for the 25 per-incident plan;
but I was impressed by there service I upgraded to the yearly plan,
which is usually 15 dollars a month but I paid it all up front and got 2 months extra free.
