Trojan.Vundo.B troubles for RMC

I'm having quite a difficult time with the vundo.B trojan. Prior to coming here for help, I updated and ran Ad-aware, Spybot, & Ewido. I tried downloading the Norton Removal tool as well, but the virus was not detected. Still I get the Norton warning: Virus detected on your computer. Object: c:\windows\system32\awvvs.dll.

I downloaded the VundoFix.exe and ran it in safe mode, as suggested on other threads in this forum. Unfortunately, it seemed unable to delete the file. Here's the Vundo log:

Hi. First of all you need to update hijackthis to version 1.99.1. Run hijackthis & go to *Config\Misc Tools\Check for update on-line*. If the site is down, go here and download the selfextracting zip version. Remove the old version by opening the program, going to config\misc tools, then uninstall & exit. You then have to delete the file manually. Unzip the new version into the hijackthis folder, or in the case of the self-extracting version, it will self install into your Program Files folder.

This version is needed to show up the 020 entry.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Can you please totally disable Norton anti-virus as this has been known to prevent access to the infected file. If you use msconfig, check to make sure Norton is not running in Task Manager.
When you are certain it is no longer running, do the vundofix again please.

Sorry for the delay in responding . . . family evacuated FL for the hurricane and have been here since Friday.

OK, I disabled Norton Anti-virus and re-booted to run the Vundo fix, but now the taskbar and all of my desktop icons are gone. All I have is the background picture. I seem to be able to run programs through Task Manager though. Should I continue with the fix as you suggested?

Hmmmm, never seen that before. You may be better off doing a system restore back to before this all happened.

Man, this is a mess! I tried doing the system restore, but that didn't work. At this point, I'd like to get my taskbar & icons back, and then worry about the infections. Any suggestions as to how I can do that? Do I need to reinstall XP? Is there a repair tool on the MS site?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try the regfix here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm on getting the taskbar back. It's about a quarter of the way down the page.
If you have your install CD, it may be worth installing it over the top.

Unfortunately, the regfix you suggested didn't work. I think I'm probably going to have to do a Windows repair, right? Only problem is that XP came OEM installed and I only have the System Recovery and Application recovery disks. Is this ok to use or do I specifically need the XP cds? (I have four computers in the house, but they all came with Windows pre-installed!)

Also, I can start just about any program through task manager, but I'm embarrassed to admit that I can find the icon I need to turn my Norton Antivirus back on. I know I have to disable it to do the Vundo fix (when I eventually get back to that), but I'd like to turn it back on in the interim.

Any direction you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

AFAIK, the recovery disk takes you right back to when you first got the PC. Without the install CD you have limited options.
Go to the folder that Norton AV is in and locate the application file and double click on it. That should start it up.
