Ubuntu < VMware < Windows XP

Howdy folks. I installed Ubuntu (Linux) under VMware Workstation under Windows XP. After having installed Ubuntu successfully, I’ve encountered the following issue: When I choose to shutdown Ubuntu in Ubuntu's logon screen, audio, system wide stops working. The sound icon in Windows’ system tray shows that audio is muted and won’t allow me to change this. I’ve been able to get around this by instead of choosing to shutdown in Ubuntu’s logon screen; I have VMware power off the virtual machine. When I use this method of “turning off”, VMware has no negative effect on Windows. I’m simply wondering why Ubuntu’s native shutdown routine changes my system as it does and is there a way to change this? I’ve included screenshots of Ubuntu’s startup and shutdown screens.
