Kids have trashed the computer again...

edited November 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
I have turned off system restore & run Ad Aware & Spybot in safe mode.
I ran hijackthis & saved the following log.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks!

You may want to print or save these instructions locally before starting.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scan

    1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    2. Run Ewido --- When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
    4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

Download CCleaner and install, but do not run it yet.

Please download the Nailfix utility .
    DO NOT run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode. To do this with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft :
    1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you the Boot Menu appears.
    2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
    3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe. Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish". Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

    Next, run Ewido again.

    1. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
    2. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
    3. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Then run HijackThis, click Scan, and place a checkmark by the following items:

Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

I did all that you asked & noticed the following that seemed kind of strange.
Several of the items you asked me to delete after the first hijackthis scan weren't there, but at the end of it all, when I ran it again, they were there.

Please post a new hijackthis log. Also, be sure to have hidden files viewable before you run HJT.

Ok, I went back & made sure show hidden files was checked (it wasn't!), re-ran Ad Aware & Spybot & here is my latest hijackthis log.

Do the first set of instructions I gave you but fix these following lines in HJT

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ProSiteFinder] C:\Program Files\ProSiteFinder\prositefinder.exe
    O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.rr.com
    O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Be sure you are doing this and the previous instructions in SAFE MODE.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you, we got real busy at work & this kinda got pushed to the back burner!
I have followed your instructions & am posting my latest log files.
FYI, everything is still extremely slow & I keep getting a message in the lower right corner when starting up "Liquid Audio has caused windows to become unstable". II can't find anyplace to remove this!

Run Adaware and Spybot again to be sure that nothing is left.

Here are two places to check for the Liquid Audio uninstall... in start/programs/Liquid Digital Media/uninstal liquid player or under control panel/add-remove programs. If it's not there see if you can find a folder on the hard drive that is related to liquid audio and change it's name. Then you can reboot and see if the system becomes faster/more stable.

Let me know what you find.
  • edited November 2005
Still can't find anything for liquid audio!
I did run Adaware & Spybot again & Adaware picked up on a bunch if new stuff-probably because there was a newer version that I upgraded to?
Spybot is picking up a couple of things. When it finishes, there is a triangle with an exclamation point inside it with the following message:
    Error during check!
NewDotNet (Datei C:\WINDOWS\wininit.ini kann nicht geoffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process)
There are two items right below that message:
    AproposMedia
    NewDotNet
When I choose the fix option, it says it can't because they are in memory & would I like to run Spybot on next restart. I choose yes, restart & always arrive back at this same spot!
I might ad that I'm getting the same results whether I'm running Spybot in normal or safe mode.
Also, the computer runs reasonably well in safe mode, but still is slower than the second coming when running normally .
I've included the latest HijackThis log just in case you need it...

    Sorry for the delayed response.

Go to THIS site to get instructions on how to remove the NewDotNet.

Once you do that, reboot and run adaware and spybot again. Reboot once again and post another HJT log. I'm thinking that once you get rid of the NewDotNet that Adaware/Spybot should be able to get rid of the Apropos.
  • edited November 2005
Went to the site & could not find newdotnet in add/remove programs.
There was no NEwDotNet folder in programs, so on to step 3. Found 3 different uninstall files & ran them all Rebooted & spybot still came back with same message!
Went to step 4, downloaded removal tool, rebooted, ran Spybot & it was still there!!!
Out of desperation, I deleted the folder referenced under the AproposMedia listing & went to the registry & deleted keys referenced under the NewDotNet listing.
Ran spybot again & got the "COngratulations, no threats found", but still have that weird german message: Error during check!
NewDotNet (Datei C:\WINDOWS\wininit.ini kann nicht geoffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process)
Here's my latest log file & thanks again!

What version of Spybot are you running? If it's 1.3, that version is known to give this error. Make sure you have the most recent version and rerun.

Also, see if you can find the file C:\WINDOWS\wininit.ini This is a one time run file that windows generates when the system has to be rebooted for installation to continue or finish. Once it's done it's supposed to rename itself wininit.bak. See if you can open the file an post the info here.
  • edited November 2005
    I was running 1.3 & have changed to 1.4.
After running the latest version, I get a message that no problems are found.
I did all this in safe mode with networking enabled.
When rebooting normally, everything is back to running extremely slow!
Trying to open the C drive to look for wininit.ini has taken several minutes, but it is present. When opening with notepad, it reads:
    NUL=C:\Windows\downlo~1\ymsgrins.exe

My latest Hijackthis log looks like this...

Delete this line from your wininit.ini file

    NUL=C:\Windows\downlo~1\ymsgrins.exe

Run spybot and adaware in regular mode. Let me know if it finds anything. Also, I think the slowdown is being caused by the Liquid Audio but I'm not sure. Let me know if you're still having the problems after fixing that line and running the scans again.

Sorry it's taking so long to get this worked out. :(
  • edited November 2005
Deleted that line & upgraded ti Windows Media Player 10. No more liquid audio messages & computer seems to be running pretty good, considering it has only 128MB of ram.
After using the imunize syatem option with Spybot, will it prevent any of that junk from being downloaded?
    Thanks for all your help.

Great! Glad to hear that things are running good.

Using Spybot's immunize function will *help* protect your computer but the people that write this SVT (Spyware, virus, trojan) stuff are constantly circumventing that protection. Your best bet is to make sure you have all updates for your OS and run Adaware and Spybot on a regular basis along with telling the kids to NOT click on things they're not familiar with. Good luck on the last, I tell my kids all the time but I still get the dreaded "Daaaaaaad!!! Something is messed up on my computer again!!"

Be sure to come on back if you run in to problems again. In the mean time, please check out Folding@home project HERE to help discover cures to many terrible diseases.
