CWShredder crashing after reboot, failing to remove Look2Me

Hi,

I'm currently battling a spyware issue and utilizing PrimeSuspect's brilliant guide on disposing of it. I've gotten as far as running CWShredder, but I'm encountering an issue with removing a CWS variant.

Here's the scenario: I've run CWShredder and it detects a variant listed as "VX2.Look2Me". I select remove and CWShredder prompts me to re-boot to complete. On re-booting, CWShredder attempts to complete the removal, but I receive a standard "Windows encountered an error and needs to close" message.

This has happened several times and I am beginning to wonder if Look2Me is somehow preventing the completion of the removal.

Does anyone have any idea how I can resolve this? Much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair has gone on and I'm at the end of my rope. :banghead: Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Make sure you have the latest version of hijackthis. You can get it from our downloads page.

    ==

    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

    Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
    • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
    • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
    • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
    • You will first be presented with a warning.
      It should look like this
      VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
      By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk.
    • At this point press enter one time.
    • Next you will see:
      Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
      Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

        C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtq.dll

      [*]Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
      [*] Next you will see:
      Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff

      [*]At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

        C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtvwa.*

        [*]Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

        [*]The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
        [*]In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

          R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html

          O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtq.dll

          O20 - Winlogon Notify: awvtq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtq.dll

          [*]After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.

          Ok, I followed the instructions exactly and everything appears to have gone off alright with the exception of the following anomalies: KillVundo didn't prompt me to press F6 after entering the first filepath, After running HJT, it did not locate R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html and O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtq.dll displayed the message "(file not found)" at the end of it. Also, fixing the files did not result in a BSOD, so I did a manual power down. Anyway, here's the info:

          Active Scan:

          Can you please do the following.

          ===============

          Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

          R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html

          O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtq.dll (file missing)

          O20 - Winlogon Notify: awvtq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtq.dll (file missing)

          Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

          ===============

          After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

          I followed the directions carefully and was sure to close all windows prior to scanning and fixing. It appears on re-scanning after reboot that the specified items are no longer present, but I did receive that same CWS error ("memory could not be referenced" or some such) on initialization (I'm not sure, but it appears to be trying to run automatically).

          Thanks!

          Go to Start/Run and type in services.msc and look up the CWShredder Service. Once you have it, stop it and set it to manual start. Close out of services.
          I believe that Trend own it now.

          Reboot and see if you still get the error.
