hey, i finally managed to gather up some money to buy some ram. Anyway i want to spend no more than $100, and i want to buy at least a gig of ram. I dont care if its 1x1024mb stick, or 2 x 512. I just need to make sure its ddr pc3200 or better. I'm not too smart when it comes to ram, so im not exactly sure what stuff is good and what isnt. I just want the best i can get for $100, preferably a lower price. thanks (preferably on a website store and not ebay)

Go for low latency and depending on your motherboard 2 sticks of 512 is much better. Some motherboards have got a feature which makes the ram perform much better with faster access times and synching. Check your dimm slots on the motherboard- if there are say 4 slots and two of them are one colour and the other two are another colour, then you have got this feature. Make sure if you buy 2 sticks of 512, that they are identical. OR you could go all out and have 2GB by matching 2 sticks of 1024mb and match them later on. Buying the 2 sticks of 512 is your best bet. And your price range, that does not sound very realistic to me. You could possibly get 2 sticks of matched 256mb to get 512 and then expand later.

I know what to look for in ram(low latency), and i know all the specs of my mobo. I'm just not sure which brands and models are good. I only have 3 slots on my mobo for ram  but even i get the 2 x 512's, i can add another 512 or even a gig stick. I definately dont need more than 1.5 gigs of ram. my pc is mainly for gaming, but i do some digital editing for school which uses alot of ram.

right now i have a 512mb and a 256mb. I'm thinking of buying 2 x 512's and just using those. I dont want to mix ram because i know my mobo is picky about mixed ram, unless its high quality stuff. I've tried all of my friends ram and it especially doesnt like that ultra ram, A.K.A ultra bad.

is it faster to have a 1 gig stick, or 2 512's if they have the exact same timings? Im thinking about getting OCZ gold

Its usually faster to use 2 sticks of 512 that are the same timings etc and brand. Go for brand names they usually have the best return policies. Generic brands are somewhat of a nightmare. ( i build pc's and iv tryed brands like lgs and hynix and had problems) OCZ sounds good and they are reputable. With the heatspreaders you will get better performance. Are you going to populate all 3 slots with 512 each and ditch the 256?

O yea and like you said earlier, i have 3 slots for ram. 1 is blue and the other 2 are yellow.

forgot to add that i probably wont overclock it.

And yes, i can find plenty of ram for under $100 which are name brand.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145440 corsair for $82

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227039 ocz for $83 (value series, but still its not generic)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146900 dual channel ocz for $90

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227031 heres some ocz a little above my budget. If its worth the extra $15(i dont want to spend 100 but i willif itl make a difference, so i dont want to sound cheap about hte $15), i

sure these arent the greatest, but still its a gig under $100
