Ars Technica reports that the US State Department has decided upon standards for RFID passports, which will be mandatory by October 2006.
Source: Ars TechnicaWhile security and privacy seem to have been addressed adequately—at least according to the State Department—the issue of sovereignty rates only the smallest paragraph. Other nations must also comply, providing appropriately chipped passports for citizens traveling to the US, including "visitors from 27 countries whose citizens don't now need visas to visit the United States." One has to wonder if Disney World and the Grand Canyon are really worth it to the international traveller.
