Can you help with sound problem?

Having shut down our PC during a thunderstorm, when restarting it we found that the monitor (although powered up) wouldn't come on. We changed the monitor for a spare we had but then the mouse and keyboard didn't function. Thought it must be a computer fault so rushed to the supplier with PC and he 're-set the BIOS' otherwise everything else seemed to work fine using his monitor. At home.. same problem.. no mouse or kb. Decided to buy a new monitor and everything seemed fine..... until we wanted sound. No sound from the monitor (on board) speakers what so ever. Have done the most of the Windows XP troubleshooter, checked device and settings and all look ok. Got to the bit where it says 'is the sound device turned on in the BIOS'.

Do you think there is a setting in the BIOS that has been changed? As we're complete novices we don't want to play with this without expert advise.

Can you help or do you think we should take it back to the shop?

Many thanks, looking forward to your valuable assistance.

    Very possibly. :)

Don't be too afraid of working with the BIOS. As long as you only change one thing at a time - and make a note of exactly what it is - you should have no trouble changing it back. (That's not to say you should get too adventurous, either. ;) )

Look for a setting referring to "Onboard Audio", or something similar. If it's Disabled you'll need to Enable it. This setting is often stashed away in a submenu. It could be under "PCI Devices", "Integrated Peripherals" or who knows what. Every company seems to have their own variation on the terminology.

    Good luck.
