Computer freeze after removal of svshost

edited November 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
The other day I got an email from my internet provider saying that they believe I may be infected with a virus. I followed the steps to see what was wrong using mcafee, symantec, ad-aware se, spyware doctor, and various other anti-virus/ anti-spyware software. None of those programs detected anything so I investigated further. I realized that my zone alarm firewall was disabled, as well as my anti-virus software. however, i was able to use them in safe mode.

I found out I may have tixanbot trojan, but it seemed odd that nothing could detect it, not even symantec, which released the description of the virus. All i had to go on was that I had svshost.exe and i needed to get rid of it. so i deleted the hosts files and the registry keys using HijackThis that contained the word svshost. I avoided svchost files. Of course, being stupid, I also deleted the backups from HijackThis because I was afraid the virus may come back if it wasn't totally erased from my hard drive.

Now, whenever i start up windows and log onto my account, everything seems fine for about 1 minute before everything freezes and i have to turn off my computer. my mouse is still able to move but i cannot click on anything and the task manager does not work either. I can still use safe mode, but i can't seem to fix the problem.

I have a feeling the virus is not completely gone or it has damaged my pc. if anyone can help, that would be great. thank-you. :)

    im not no computer wiz. but ive had my share of viruses. and im sorry to break it to you man. but i dont think svc host is a virus. you may have deleted an important system file :eek: . that explains why your computer isnt runnint right now. now im not 100% sure that is a system file. but i also have that file. and im like 99% sure that its safe. and i dont know how to help you from there.

    I didn't delete any SVChost files, I left those alone because i knew they were vital to the system. I deleted SVShost files, which is a form of a trojan virus, it's part of the tixanbot virus.

    oooooooo you really had me confused for a second. SVC and SVS lol.

    And I forgot to add that my computer freezes EVERY time I logon to any user account, but it does not freeze when I am in safe mode. Could it have anything to do with removing the svshost registry keys. Maybe it damaged my registry or it modified my registry keys permanantly? If so, is there a way to fix the registry. I am not currently on my computer, but I can have a HJT log up later today if that can help solve the problem.

    How far can you get into your account before the comp freezes?

    A HJT log will be useful.

    EDIT: Did you delete the backup folder or the files inside? They could still be in the Recycle Bin if you din't empty it.

    My account completely loads and I can click and open things for about 30 secs to 1 min before it just completely freezes in the middle of what I'm doing. Then I am able to click on things, but they just don't open and my mouse shows that loading icon permanantly. At this point I can still move the mouse but it can't do anything. Everything just becomes nonresponsive.This then forces me to shut down my pc improperly and when I turn it back on the exact same thing happens.

    As for the backups from HJT, I completely deleted them from my computer because I was afriad it may be able to come back if I didn't completely get rid of them. I am positive that the only registry values I got rid of were SVShost files, so I don't know what is wrong .What I don't understand is why getting rid of svshost caused this problem in the first place. I researched it and other people who had svshost/ tixanbot virus aka Msn virus, got rid of all svshost files and all was fine in the end. I know that svshost may have modified my registry before I got rid of it, but then my computer should have frozen before also.

    Are the HJT backups still in the recycle bin? Thats if they go to the bin...

    You shouldn't have modified the virus until you got rid the file itself.

    I think the best thing is to do a System Restore but don't do it yet until I ask someone else. :)

    I deleted the HJT backups from the recycle bin also. As for system restore, I've tried that and it says my computer is unable to access a restore point or something like that.

    After getting rid of the svshost registry keys I went into the system 32 folder, found a hidden folder with random letters and found an actual svshost file inside. I then deleted the whole folder because I knew it had been put there by the virus and svshost was the only file inside. I also found a file named svshost.exe in the prefetch folder and deleted that file.

    I've asked Crunchie to have a look for you. He will tell you how to remove MyWebSearch :)
  • edited October 2005
    Is mywebsearch responsible for my computer freezing? I know it's adware or something but I was wondering how serious it is. I'm on the verge of wiping my hard drive clean and starting over again. I just hope I don't have to do that.

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Please go here & install ALL critical updates required for your system, including service pack 1a for both XP and IE6.
    Most malware is designed to attack unpatched XP systems - exploiting the available 'holes' - and can bypass third-party protection on an unpatched system. The most that can be done with an unpatched system is put a temporary bandage on it. Your system can potentially be reinfected within minutes of cleaning it.

    ===============

    Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

    MyWebSearch

    The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

    ===============

    Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'.

    In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open.

    OR

    You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

    regsvr32 /u MWSSRCAS.DLL
    regsvr32 /u MWSBAR.DLL
    regsvr32 /u Starware.dll

    It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/.../search/ie.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/.../search/ie.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

    O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\2.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL
    O2 - BHO: mwsBar BHO - {07B18EA1-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\2.bin\MWSBAR.DLL
    O2 - BHO: Starware - {CA356D79-679B-4b4c-8E49-5AF97014F4C1} - C:\Program Files\Starware\bin\Starware.dll

    O3 - Toolbar: Starware - {D49E9D35-254C-4c6a-9D17-95018D228FF5} - C:\Program Files\Starware\bin\Starware.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\mwsoemon.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\2.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
    C:\Program Files\Starware

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    ==

    Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
    If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

    Thank-you to Trogan_1000 and Crunchie for the help, my comp is running fine now. I ended up deleting everything on my hardrive and reinstalling everything. Unfortunately, by the time I checked back at this thread I had already wiped my harddrive clean, so there is no virus and my pc isn't freezing anymore. Anyways, I really appreciated the help and the time you took to help me out. :)
