New HD, OS Upgrade results in BSoD

edited October 2005 in Hardware
I have a problem hopefully i can recieve help.

Okay here is my story, its not long so no worries.

A friend of mine wanted a new HD and Os upgrade on his dell(P4 1.8 gHz, 512 Ram) So we put in a WD 80 gig 7200 IDE in the machine, followed WD's intructions for HD instlation. Then i tried to install windows Xp pro. I formatted the partion and it completed the format. Right after the format I recieved the Blue Screen of death. The BSoD was describing some BIOS conflict or error. I am
not to clear on the deatails, but it was bios related.

I remember with his old HD and OS(XP HE) he was getting BSoD when he was running any program. Could it be a BIOS virus. Also will reseting BIOS work. I need allot of suggestions please.

Thanks allot.

no its not a virus. Start by testing your memory.

And hopefully you didnt install that sorry disk software that comes with the WD hard drive right?

i did use the disk, but before that i was getting BSod, i can always delete the partion. How would you test the bios on AMI chip?

    you don't.

Test the memory not the bios. Your bios is not causing BSOD's suddenly. bad memory will. CPU overheating will. LOTS of things will. But no you did not have a virus attack your bios. I promise.

Any chance you can post the BSOD message and codes displayed?

Resetting the BIOS is not a bad idea, but let's see what your message is.

    Thanks.

EDIT:  , sorry Tex. Didn't know if you were responding- grislylamb, you are in great hands :D .

i meant testing the memory via bios, sorry. The BSoD ask if i have a spyware or anti virus program on the bios.

I think Tex meant running something like Memtest86-

    You get it here.

Run it a couple of passes and see if you have a problem.

    Hope that helps

download memtest, make the bootable disk and test the memory.
If there is more than one stick of memory test them one at a time.
If there are any faults you will need to replace the memory.
If the memory is clean, then we can talk about more complex problems.
