Is it possible to get 5 pc's set up on a 4 port router. Linksys as stated above.
Didn't know if there was any tricks to run the 5th pc through one of the other pc's or other tricks to get the 5th one online.

You need a switch or a hub connected with a crossover cable or uplink port to the router. That's the most reliable way to do it.

If one of your towers has dual Ethernet, It is very possible, I daisy chained 3 ASUS Deluxe SLI towers with 1 internet connection, and they all ran very smooth with not disconnects. but they all do operate under 1 IP address.

thats possible to work under 1 IP?? I did something with a hub... don't remember what, but somehow I got 2 computers with the same IP address and on both computers XP kept giving me an error message saying there was an IP Conflict. I didn't know it would work having the same IP.

I think what he means is he has one computer connected to his router and running Internet Connection Sharing on it's secondary Ethernet port, next machine connects it's primary ethernet to the first machine's secondary and runs ICS on it's own secondary ad infinitum. The router only sees the IP of the first machine. I did this a couple times in a pinch but I don't do it continuously since there's speed penalties daisy chaining over ICS as each machine has to perform routing on the packets for the next machine down and some Internet services don't work well with Network Address Translation.

Hawk: the odds are really good your router will assign IP's for a full subnet (250 or so addresses) so don't be afraid to attach hubs or switches to increase your available ports. The local computer Goodwill normally sells that sort of thing for <$15.

Thnx for all the input guys. Appreciate it.
Gnome, I'll let you know when I get the parts all together in the 5th box.
Then we'll go from there. Thnx bud.
Think I might need to get a couple parts to finish it.

I'm doing exactly what you describe, using a Linksys BEFSR41 router and a couple of switches connected to router ports. If you're looking for the simplest way to do it, a cheap switch will cause you the least amount of grief. The router will take care of the IP addresses automatically and you don't need to worry about the ICS stuff.

After rebates they start at $8, not including shipping. I've seen specials at Best Buys and MicroCenter where they are virtually free. You will probably spend more on the cables than you do on the add-on switch. :)

Oh, Cool prof, That's what I was looking for. Quick and easy.
Also, That's the same router I have.
Thnx for the link. I'd like to get one of the linksys switches, but I'm not sure which is better. There's 3, just on the first page! Which would you recommend?
I'm using cat 5 cabling on all pc's.
I don't understand the idea of how the switch works though--- You plug 2 of the 5 pc's into the switch and then the switch plugs into the empty slot on the router?
And both pc's can go out at the same time on the net?
Just trying to get a handle on how it works.

That's easy enough. Thnx Gnome. Which Linksys switch would be the better one? I want to order one today. But, I want to make sure I get a good one. Not to mention the right one.

I have this one, but any should be OK. It's a bit smaller, but it does match the router. :D

    ..$23.99
    - $10.00 Mail-In Rebate
    + $1.99 Three Day Shipping
    $15.98 total cost

Probably not as good as Gnome's offer, though. ;)

Exactly right. If you do that and look at the DHCP Clients Table by going to 192.168.1.1 in your browser (might vary by firmware version, but it's under "Status" on my router) you'll see all of your computers on the list.

    Thnx prof for the info.
Gnome gave me a CentreCOM FH705E switch. Works fine.
The overclocking had my mouse & keyboard locking up, so I backed it down a little.
A little to warm I think. Seems stable now at 56-58C. I think the barton can take that. I might look into getting a little more cooling on it.

OK, Got #5 hooked up and folding. I'm typing on it now.
Gonna have #6 as soon as I can finish getting a few parts for it and put it together.
Need small power supply. And small HD.
    #5 (AMD K6-III 550) & #6 (AMD K6-II 450) aren't killer machines but they'll fold.

Ahh Cool, No rush bud. I'm still workin on getting all these boxes on EMIII for observation from one office pc. I've got too many drives and folders with diff names shared.
Confusing me where each folding folder is for finding path.
I'll have to rename the boxes 1-2-3-4-5-6. ;D
