Urgent ... race against time... explorer/dr watson error

edited November 2005 in Science & Tech
Major time restraint... i will soon have no option but to format

Windows XP Loads ... Then up pops a Explorer Error then a DR Watson Debugger error and that is where she stays. all locked up

I originally thought spyware but have come to the conclusion with help of a xpert from this site that it isnt

I realise i will need to give more info than this but i dont really know what info to give

Aghhhhhhhh

Have you been able to do a repair install?

I havent backed up and am worried about losing information
I havent got any of the disks that came with the laptop either
I could us another copy of xp but again, i will probly need to backup first
how long do you think it would take to backup 30GB on a 100 network

    Cheers

okay, you don't need to backup to do a repair install.

You can use a different disk, but it must be the SAME EDITION - for example, if this was a copy of Win XP Home that came on the laptop from the factory (such as dell, etc.) - that's called an OEM copy. You need to do a repair install with another copy of OEM Home edition. You cannot use retail or corporate, etc.

Let's get that out of the way first - do you have a copy of WinXP that is the same exact edition that is on the laptop?

Okay, are they OEM versions? I'm going to assume the laptop shipped WITH XP Pro on it. If that's so - look on the sticker on the laptop and check to see what it says - OEM edition by Dell, Compaq, etc?

The CD that you have - is it a retail or is it OEM?

    The 2002 is unimportant.

Ok The Laptop (a Dell) says nothing about OEM on the sticker
And the CD i have Is from a HP Desktop and says nothing about OEM either

It SHOULD work. it sounds like they are both XP Pro OEM.

okay, boot off the XP CD, and go through as if you were going to install it, but when it gets to the thing that says "perform a repair install" - say yes. It will keep all your applications and settings, and just replace OS files.

    Try that.

you have to know that. if you don't, it's over and you need to reformat.
