Detecting IDE drives....

edited November 2005 in Hardware
I built a computer for a friend of mine about a year back, dont remember alot of the specs except that it has an MSI K8N Neo mobo in it...just today it came down with a Detecting IDE drives issue, and he cant seem to get into the boot list to fix the fact htat it will only boot from a CD...does this mean something has gone wrong with his hard drive? Is that even possible after a year of working fine?

Yes its very possible (but not for sure from what you posted) that a ide drive will fail. They usually fail in the 1'st.... 24 months

Check if the smart option is enabled in BIOS and then check your BIOS for an option for detecting drives. The smart option should tell you whether the drive is bad, or the option for detecting the drives will sit there for a couple of seconds when attempting to detect the CHS of the defective drive.

Depending on who the manufacturer is of your drive, they usually have a downloadable utility for diagnosing the status of HDs. Make sure you have a floppy ready for those.
