Look2me problems

Hey people.

This is my first attempt at seeking help from others via forum for my infection...

I'm not uber-computer savvy, but can get around nonetheless. I've looked up a lot of references to the symptoms of this infection and am extremely frustrated.

I have just fixed my hardware issues and finally got my computer working. The girlfriend decided to take a stroll through virus-land... Needless to say, I had a heck of a time removing as much of it as possible. Been laboring at this over a week now. Looks like I'm down to one last problem : LOOK2ME. :shakehead

Norton and Ewido keep finding spyware.look2me, and adware.look2me DLL's in my system32 folder. The DLL names are random, minus the guard.tmp. Some of the DLL's I can delete, some I can't, and no matter what, they keep coming back upon reboot. :scratch:

I've downloaded a few tools that people discussing this problem suggest. HijackThis, KillBox and VX2finder and the Norton FxSPL2Me. Along with a slew of anti-virus/adware/spyware/malware programs. (had to delete some of them that would conflict with the 15 day trial of Norton.

Please... can someone help me? Tell me what I need to copy for you and ease the pop-up pain. :banghead:

    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

    From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with an hijackthis log.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Hey Crunchie,

    I've ran option #2 and rebooted twice. The scan doesn't start upon bootup.

    I disabled my anti-virus/spyware programs, and tried, but it still won't start.

    Suggestions?

    Rats. I don't know whats going on there. Want to go the manual route?

    Download and run VX2Finder(.exe).
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder.exe

    Open the program and click the 'Click to Find VX2.aBetterInternet' button. This will attempt to find all VX2 related files and registry keys and when present display them in its logfile. To create a logfile, click the button named: 'Make Log'. This will open logfile using Notepad. Please post (copy/paste) the results and post them in this topic.

    Download these two tools:

    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe
    &
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe

    Run Dllcompare by clicking the "Run Locate.com" then click Compare button... when done post that log here.do not reboot once you have posted the logs because all the filenames will change otherwise.

    Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click the file to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

    ==

    Stay offline when doing the following fix.

    Open killbox and paste in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\archlib.dll

    With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, click the option *replace on reboot* and *Use Dummy* which will create a numbered dummy file instantly for you.

    Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes
    A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No (since you are not finished adding all related files in yet)

    Repeat the above for each of these;

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dzvoice.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\irr2l5~1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\p4r40e~1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lv6409~1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\n0r2la~1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tuolhelp.dll
    C:\Windows\System32\Guard.tmp

    On that last file, close all programs and Reboot your computer.

    Post another log from dllcompare please. A log from VX2 finder and an hijackthis log too.

    It's 1:30am, gunna head to bed. Will check this thread in the morning. Gunna leave the computer on in case you don't want me to reboot.

    Also, my windows all align to the right instead of the left when collapsed now... :confused: Not sure why.

    Anyways, gnight, and thanks for all this help so far! :):thumbsup:

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    When we're done cleaning off your system, I'd recommend that you install all the critical windows updates available from Microsoft, up to service pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many 'problems' from reoccurring in the future.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad - C:\WINDOWS\system32\irr2l59o1.dll (file missing)

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============
    Also, my windows all align to the right instead of the left when collapsed now... Not sure why.

    Try dragging them from there to the bottom.

    ==

    Type javascript:navigator.userAgent or just copy and paste it in your IE Address bar then hit enter. Paste the result here with another hijackthis log.

    The only update available seems to be SP2.

    Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click the file to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.
    Reboot and do the 'javascript:navigator.userAgent' again to check that it's gone.

    Do a google for the SP1a download. I will check later. Am off to work now.

    Looks like that user agent string has gone, so hopefully you are good. Please post another hijackthis log and I'll have a look. How is your PC?
  • edited November 2005
    Well, no pop-ups yet! :D Can't thank you enough... if this was the easiest way to remove it, I'd have never gotten there on my own.

    What programs would you suggest to help maintain a healthy PC? Anti virus / spyware etc...

    Some ideas of good subscription programs and free ones would be helpful.

    Thanks again! :)

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

    ===============

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

    Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

    Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

    Clear your Temp folders.
    Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
    Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

    Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
    delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

    Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    For XP users.
    After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
    To flush the XP system Restore Points.

    Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

    When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
    On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

    Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

    Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

    Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

    Thank you so much! (sorry for the belated reply, been crazy busy at work)

    How is the compatibility of Opera compared to Firefox? Coulda sworn I tried that browser a while back and it was really glitchy. Though it has been a while... Maybe it was just my negligence.

    I'll scope out the links in you gave me.

    I've already referred coworkers and friends to this site if they have persistant spyware problems that conventional anti-virus programs can't handle. Very helpful! Thanks Crunchie!

    I'm a stick around and try to learn a little more about how we cleaned my PC and maybe I can take care of it myself if a next time occurs, and maybe help others. :thumbsup: A+!

    No worries :).
    I have been using Opera now for over a year (probably close to 18 months) and yes, it did have a few glitches. The latest version (8.50) I have found to be very stable, not having experienced any crashes yet. I just love what you can do with it. I have over 100 canned replies that Opera stores as 'Notes' that I can insert into a post with just 2 clicks of the mouse :).
    Has mouse gestures too, voice control, tabs, built in email client and more. Best of all is it's now free :D.
