NT Authority 1073741819
Would appreciate suggestions to the following:

The NT Authority message comes up for shutdown in 60 seconds and then reboot.

Problem:

Cannot get past welcome screen to install software for virus.
Cannot get XP setup disk to work (screen goes black) after click any key for setup
Cannot get into safe mode (cannot move up to safe mode with arrow keys) from normal boot

In other words, I'm locked out of computer except to the welcome screen which means that I cannot get to "run"

Thanks for suggestions

The window where you make safe mode choices comes up with F8, but I cannot move in that window (up and down arrows do not move selection.

i assume this is a usb keyboard?

Try enabling usb keyboard support in the BIOS. Let us know which motherboard you have if you have trouble finding the option.

I must confess that Gibbons was correct about the keyboard. Swapped the wonderful Microsoft keyboard for an older IBM (not usb) and it worked. Made it to safe mode but did a dumb thing after my patience level ran over. Disabled NT Authority. Now computer does not bring up message from NT but says my copy of xp is not registered. I have in the past registered xp. While safe mode comes up, there is no way to get to control panel since I disabled NT Authority. Decided to run setup from xp disk to see if repair would work. Goes to point of asking for administrators password. I don't recall entering a password when I installed xp. Have tried various passwords that I have used in the past, but none work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I did not have a good bit of information in this computer, I would
    A reinstall
    B take a hammer..............

    Thanks

If you've got another computer that's running, you can take the HD out of the broken computer, move it to the the one that works and transfer the info off of it.

Also, try using a blank password. Just hit return/enter when it prompts for the admin password.
