Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
ok i ran the scan as asked but the computer didn't reboot properly
the msdos looking window for l2mfix said it was running through the scan ok, but then a warning window opened up saying something about a registry error (i forget the exact message, sorry!). when i closed the window, the l2mfix scan finished and the msdos window disappeared, but then nothing else happened for like 10 mins. my desktop background was visible, but nothing else appeared (start bar, desktop icons etc). i rebooted the computer again, but i dont have a l2mfix log for you because of this

Download SP1a and the latest version of IE first from windows update. Do you have a legit copy of Windows?
no pop-ups, everything seems ok. i'm babysitting tonight, so i'll check again tomorrow to ensure my flatmate hasn't screwed it up again in my abscence.
i'm gonna run that cleaner program from the other thread to try and tidy up the registry a bit.
i don't actually know if my windows is legit or not, lol! my pc was kind of stuck together from bits and bobs in my mum's friend's basement (my mum's friend is an I.T wizkid). i just kind of assumed it would be legit, but i'll ask him next time I see him.
can you recommend a virus shield that can stop this happening again? i was running microsoft anti-spyware beta 1 along with weekly scans from spyware doctor for 6 months with no problems until this happened. a friend of mine also recommended using mozilla as a web browser, is this worth investigating?
also, thank you very, very much for your time! not sure how to repay you though, but you have been a lifesaver!
thanks again, look forward to the info on security
i phoned the guy i got the computer off and left a message with him, will have an answer on that one shortly
i kinda got the impression that the microsoft program was a virus and firewall "all-in-one" package - plus the fact that it was microsoft made me think it would be sweet. now, im not so sure, so any info on freebies would be great.
oh, and i couldn't help but notice that owen scored twice and rooney only scored once tonight
hey gimmee a break, little things like owen scoring more than rooney for england are all the toon have to shout about these days, lol! some game though, best friendly i've seen in years.
i can't remember exactly what the function on the microsoft program is called (i'll check later when i'm back home), but its something along the lines of "real-time protection". it seemed to be a firewall only with a different name. if any dodgy files were trying to get through, it would give you an option to block, remove or allow the changes it was trying to make. plus it had all the normal kind of system scans and stuff that you get with most virus packages.
i get the feeling from your posts that i haven't been anywhere near properly protected using the microsoft program...
No no no...i'm not saying you havn't properly been protected. I just wasn't sure what Microsoft product you were talking about since you said Microsoft Virus but I now take it you mean Microsoft Anti-Spyware?
Microsoft Anti-Spyware works like a virus protector in ways like you mentioned above.
I'm still on the laptop but I will you give the info I promised
Free Anti-Virus: Download AVG Free Edition from here. Its a good Anti-Virus that doesn't use any system resources. I use this myself.
Free Firewall: Download ZoneAlarm from here. I don't use this but I know it works well.
Don't forgot to only have one Anti-Virus and one Firewall.

Follow this guide by Crunchie to stay more secure
Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:
Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.
Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.
Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables.
Install and keep updated,Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.
Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.
Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.
Clear your Temp folders. Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.
Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.
Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.
Empty the Recycle Bin.
For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.
Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.
Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
lol, I'm not sure where you clicked but if you go to the bottom of the page, you will see Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition Now! as a title. Click Download your AVG Free and thats the Free Edition.

How are things?
---
Download SP1a and the latest version of IE first from windows update.
1) Good thing the popups have stopped.
2) Find out if your copy of windows is legit or pirated
3) You should only have 1 Anti-Virus and 1 Firewall on any computer. If you don't have either than I can give you some FREE good ones - let me know.
4) For spyware protection, I suggest Ad-Aware, SpyBot and SpywareBlaster which can be found in the Security Download section.
5) I normally ask people to join the F@H as a way of thanks. I'l give more info when I am on the desktop pc.
6) I will give you a set of instructions to follow to stay more secure. Again, when I go on the comp
i phoned the guy i got the computer off and left a message with him, will have an answer on that one shortly
i kinda got the impression that the microsoft program was a virus and firewall "all-in-one" package - plus the fact that it was microsoft made me think it would be sweet. now, im not so sure, so any info on freebies would be great.
oh, and i couldn't help but notice that owen scored twice and rooney only scored once tonight
"i kinda got the impression that the microsoft program was a virus and firewall "all-in-one" package..."?
---
Was unfortunate for Rooney to only score one when he worked harder then Owen :shakehead
Still, Rooney plays for a better club :tongue2:
i can't remember exactly what the function on the microsoft program is called (i'll check later when i'm back home), but its something along the lines of "real-time protection". it seemed to be a firewall only with a different name. if any dodgy files were trying to get through, it would give you an option to block, remove or allow the changes it was trying to make. plus it had all the normal kind of system scans and stuff that you get with most virus packages.
i get the feeling from your posts that i haven't been anywhere near properly protected using the microsoft program...

If you want, you can join the Folding@Home Project. We would like you to join the team. ===
Follow this guide by Crunchie to stay more secure
Did I cover everything?
one final question for you, then i promise to leave you alone!
i dumped microsoft antispyware and have set up avg, but it says it is a trial version for 28 days
does this mean i have to find another in 28 days time?
i'm in the process of following all your other instructions, thanks!
