Possible electrical short on wireless router?

edited November 2005 in Science & Tech
All,

I recently reconfigured my main entertainment center where my wireless router and cable modem are. When I plugged everything in, I accidentally switched the modem and router DC plugs. The router is 5v and the modem is 12, and I the only reason I noticed is because I smelled it. --Not good!--

My main desktop connects via wireless, and my wireless connection no longer pops up under "available wireless connection" - however, I am using the router right now on my laptop through a normal ethernet cord.

Is it possible that I only shorted out the wireless components and not the routing components? Or am I just panicking and I messed something up during reconnection so my desktop couldn't find the wireless connection?

Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated - before I go out and buy a new router...

Thanks

Good question.. If you smelled it though, I just can't imagine it would work again. That is weird - its possible that the ethernet ports are fine but the wireless is fried. See if you can RMA it :p

Sorry, RMA is Return Merchandise Authorization. In other words, call the manufacturer and see if you can get them to send you a new one.

Well, its a D-link (my fiance's)... I tried to get her to buy a Linksys. I've always preferred them. Maybe now is my chance to get one!

    Thanks for the help!

If you smelled it, it's gone. Your wired ethernet may have survived for the short-term, but I wouldn't continue using it and expect it to be reliable.
