Need Help w/ Nasty malware!

Hi There,

recently a friend brought me their laptop (compaq pressario R3000) complaining it doesn't work. upon closer inspection, I believe the machine is infected w/ popuper.exe, among other things...

I've researched the program and found it to be wonderfully documented with removal instructions on your site. My problem, however, is unique in that whatever malware is running will not let me open any programs, including windows explorer...and prevents access to the start menu.

Also, I CAN boot into safemode, however i still encounter the same problems w/ opening programs, etc....the operating system is XP home..

I'm tempted to format, but I need to salvage some files before doing so, so even if someone could help me to the point where i can use windows explorer, that would be fantastic...

thanks in advance and sorry for the inconvenience

    Please download hijackthis from our downloads page, install it in a permanent folder and post the log here.

    If you have lost access to your desktop and task bar it is because smitfraud has infected your wininet.dll file. In this case you may be able to access explorer via your task manager and then run these steps.

    this is in your removal guide for the infection i think i have....i cannot access my desktop or task bar at all...i can run a select few programs by using the new task function in task manager, however when trying to install and run adaware and hijackthis, errors tend to occur...

    after running the smitRem program i seem to have eliminated the culprit processes, however i still cannot access any of my desktop or taskbar...preventing access to control panel, etc....

    im completely frustrated on this one :confused: and ANY help with how to proceed would be greatly appreciated....here's my HJT logfile:

    Can you please do the following.

    Download CWShredder 2.15 from here. Run it and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

    ===============

    Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

    WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro

    The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro\AVKernel.exe
    C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro\AVTray.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinSoftware\wff.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

    O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVTray] "C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro\AVTray.exe"

    O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.coolwebsearch.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchmeup.com

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: st3 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: st3i - C:\WINDOWS\q796348296.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: style2 - C:\WINDOWS\q329625.dll

    O23 - Service: AVKernel - WinSoftware, Ltd. - C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro\AVKernel.exe

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinSoftware

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\q796348296.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\q329625.dll

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    You will likely have to do a repair of Windows. To do that, please follow the instructions here;

    hi there...fixed what you mentioned with HJT and attempted to do a repair on XP Home...therein lays where i ran into more problems...the laptop i'm fixing came preinstalled with an OEM copy of xp home...i performed a repair using a backup copy of xp home that i had laying around...all seemed to be going well until i tried to logon...windows claimed that i needed to activate it before logging on....so i contacted microsoft and provided them with the info needed to activate it over the phone...it seems that the product key was invalid...microsoft proceed to provide me with a new product key, but to no avail...the gentleman i spoke to claims that whatever was on the laptop before the repair messed with the registry and is preventing the repair from completing properly....

    i can still boot into safe mode, but run into the same troubles with opening programs, explorer, etc...(they won't open)....

    is there perhaps a good registry cleaner i could try? cleanmypc turned up lots of malware but unfortunately the trial version won't clean all of it...

    im thinking that a format might be the ony way out, but i REALLY need to save some of the documents on the HD if at all possible...even a different OS that would allow me just to salvage the files i need (put them on a thumbdrive or cd)

    any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

    cheers,

    You may be able to activate it using the original product key. Use the tool found here to locate it, save it and try the installation again.

    i had previously tried that...sorry should have mentioned it...i got the key from that program and tried to install windows...to no avail...it seems as though whatever has hijacked the machine has corrupted the registry so bad that i can't even retrieve the original key....

    i'll try one more time....

    any other suggestions in the meantime?

    cheers,

    Seems like you need to backup what you need and reformat :(. If you can create a partition on the drive you should be able to do that. Good luck :).

    hi crunchie,

    could you give me a quick rundown of how to go about creating a partition and backup up my files? it seems this is the only way to go :-(

    thanks again,

    Rather than go through a long list of instructions, I have provided a link that gives step by step instructions. Used them myself about a month ago :).

    thanks so much for all your help! it has been greatly appreciated...i ended up installing xp pro to the same partition to salvage my files, then formatting...all is well now...just have the tedious task of locating all of the drivers for the notebook...

    you can probably set this as resolved now...

    thanks again!
