    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this can you start Spybot and go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit". Do not forget to re-enable it when we are done :).

    ===============

    Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

    Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm

    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B56A7D7D-6927-48C8-A975-17DF180C71AC} - (no file)

    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher.lnk = ?

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    ...(Unless you've set these with an anti-spyware program like SpyBot's Immunize feature, have HiJackThis fix this.)

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    Thanks i moved HJT to its own folder on the hdd. The folder it was in was not a system temp folder but just a temp folder i created on my desktop to extract files to. Tea timer disabled and ran the scan. when i fixed it gave me an error message that said:

    Unexpected error occurred!
    Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe).
    Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.
    This message has been copied to your clipboard.

    I tried to email him but my email was returned.

    I still get the popups. here is the current logfile

    Try this first;

    Go to your start button and then to the Run option. Type in services.msc an hit ok.
    Locate the windows messenger service and stop it, then disable it.

    If that doesn't stop them, do this;

    Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
    If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

    Not seeing anything bad in that log either.

    Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
    Click the Free Trial link under to "SpySweeper" to download the program.
    Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
    It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
    Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
    Click the Sweep Options tab.
    Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    Sweep Memory
    Sweep Registry
    Sweep Cookies
    Sweep All User Accounts
    Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    Sweep for Rootkits
    Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
    Click Sweep Now on the left side.
    Click the Start button.
    When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
    Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
    It will remove all of the items found.
    Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
    Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
    Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.

    Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
    Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
    Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    1) Restart your computer
    2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

    For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

    Once in Safe Mode, please run Ewido, and do a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.

    Save the logfile from the scan. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

    I didn't delete the findings in the compressed files because i know that they aren't the source of the problem and wish to keep the files.

    Thanxs again for your help, i'll let you know if i have any more problems.

    If the key gen is what I think it may be, it has possibly come bundled with malware :). Slap me if I'm wrong :D.
  • edited November 2005
    ive had that keygen on my computer for months without symptoms, this stuff came from an active x intalation (admittedly i was looking for more keygens :banghead: )

    Set the page file for about 0ne and one half times your actual physical RAM. Set the min/max to the same setting too.
