Spyware virus

A mate of mine has tried to install BT broadband. Installation went OK but now he can't access the web, always gets page unavailable, or his email.

After talking to him it now appears that he saw 'Spyware Virus' flash on the screen. Have got a recent magazine freeby CD with Spybot and Ad-ware SE on it which I am going to post to him, is there anything else that I can download that may help. He is unable to access the web even on his old dial up connection. Any help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Computer has XP, runs at about 1Gig with bags of memory.

    Hi,

Best thing to do is for you to download HJT and send him the file. Get a log and post it here.

What do you mean you got a free Magazine CD with SpyBot and Ad-Aware?

Also, 1GB is the memory :D

Sorry should have made things a bit clearer, 1 gig =1.0GHz, the CD's are given away described as 'free' with PC Answers [ nothing in life is free - only the perception of it], they have loads of stuff on them, whether any of it is any good is open to question. Thanks for the HJ offer.

OK cool!!! If you download HijackThis (HJT) and create a log file from your friends computer then we can see if there is anything bad on the computer
