"modified theme" please help

edited April 2006 in Science & Tech
This problem has been bothering me for a week now... I try to place a background picture on my desktop (Display Properties Window) but it wont let me click on the options. The monitor screen on top of the options is white. Strange thing is when I start the comp the picture appears, but as soon as the start bar appears the screen goes blue. Another thing I see and i belive is linked to this problem is that in the theme tab ( display properties window) is on modified theme with a white screen behind the "sample:", I tried to change it to windows XP and clicked apply, i closed the window and when i open it up its back to "mofidied theme", i saved as the modfied theme and it stuck to that name, did the same with the windows xp theme and i couldn't change my background picture. Also tried deleting the modified theme and all the saved but when i open the display properties window the modified theme re-appears... if anyone knows what is this problem it would be a great help.
* All i want is to be able to place a background picture... *

Have you installed any non-MS themes at any point? Many of them are just excuses to load your system up with spyware.

You might check the Themes service and make sure it's set to "Automatic", too.

    Good luck. :)

Look in C:\Windows\system32 and see what version of the file "uxtheme.dll" you have. There is a problem with some programs and some versions of that file. A patch is available here, but make sure you follow the directions carefully so you'll have a backup of your original file.

Have you tried logging on to another user account and seeing if you get the same problem? If not, that's worth a shot for troubleshooting purposes. Make a new user account if you need to.

EDIT: Do you perhaps have the web desktop business enabled, with it showing you a blank web page?

The uxtheme.dll version is 6.0.2800.1106 , Im just finishing the download for the service pack 2 so after that I'll download the newer version on the link you posted, and nope, loged on to another user account and had the same problem. Don't know why this is happening never happend before on this comp, though i formated it a month ago.. I'll post when I download the newer version, thanks.

How did you get past this? I'm having the same error and cannot seem to get SP2 installed.

I just searched the sp2 in msn.com and looked for the windows site and downloaded it from there. I tried from a link and coulden't install it but when i went to the original site it downloaded and installed easily. Also uninstall the one you downloaded so there wont be any problems just in case.

Had the same problem, solution as follows:
    1. All filenames starting with *test.exe are invisible !
    2. Reason for that was in my case a virus in notepad.exe
    3. Only way to remove it was by booting in pure dos and then delete all files with the name notepad.exe (Folder \Windows , \windows\system32)
    4. Check also with Hijackthis all entrys that look strange
