System Shutdown problem !

edited November 2005 in Hardware
hi,
i'm having windows xp pro with sp2 along with mcafee personal firewall plus, mcafee virus scan updated regularly and also microsoft anti-spyware. everything had been updated including windows and i had no problem while using dail-up, but before 2 weeks i switched to broadband cable and faced some problems. when i connect to internet aftersome times i get a message system shutdown nt authority system RPC terminated unexpectdly etc.. and after restart i get Export shell error. Actually everyone thinks this is a worm but myself too so i downloaded stinger from mcafee, other tool from symantec and found no worm detected. i done this by turning off my system restore. i even checked my firewall settings but the problem is not resolved so i had to bypass that window by typing shutdown -a in run window. After bypassing that window i found all rows in the column username of taskmanager in process tab changed to unknown but actually it should be my name i.e sankar but after i get that system shutdown window, the username changes to unknown. after restart it comes normal to my name. i dont known what to do. i runned all the removal tool and found no worms or virus detected and also i updated all my virus dats and scanned my comp but none of them were caught. to help you better i created hijack this log before the appear of system shutdown window and after the system shutdown window i.e afte the change of username to unknown. don't force me to update a patch from microsoft bcoz i already updated all the patches from windows update. please find a solution for this i will be gratefull

    I'll help to the best of my knowledge, take what I say with a grain of salt and if anyone else has another opinion, please post.

    First question. Did you get your copy of Mcafee legitly? If you downloaded if off of the internet, that's possibly your problem but if you paid for it, you're fine.

    Also, I looked through your stuff, some of it is stuff I haven't heard of (massdown.exe, assuming that's a tool to download webpages from the other ones with it) and the rest are simply things that come with a computer. Or are masking themselves as a nasty thing but I don't think that's the case.

    Second question. Did you install the internet right? I'm pretty sure you just botched that as it's quite difficult. Took me nearly a year to get my wireless cable set up so it didn't screw up that much...and it's screwing up again...so it's quite fickle...

    And finally, did you install the broadband yourself or did you have a professional come to your house and do it for you. Like I said, it's not easy, often best not to attempt alone..especially after dial-up (dial up - plug into wall, plug into computer, computer recognizes with no problems...cable - 'WHAT IS THING THING STICKING INTO ME!? *rejects*' god cable can be annoying...)

    To summarize, you weren't hijacked, trojaned or wormed (to my knowledge and most likely others). It's probably the cable installation messing up, check that out.

    Hope this helped in one way or another. Good luck with getting your computer fixed.

    how does cable installation messes up ? but anyway a professional only installed it and for your detail i will tell you about the connection i am using sify broadband which is connected by nic ethernet card . a cable has been laid from the server to my home and i connect internet by network card. do i need to change the setting of my network ? i give you this information bcoz u must not wrongly think that i am using ADSL broadband which is connected by telephone line. i am using internet by means of network card. i even enabled firewall for my network do i need to change the firewall setting of my network connection . i think it has full filesharing option but i dont think .

    waiting for your reply

    Your Hijack this log is clean:

    Although check this as i am not sure about it?;
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

    That said I would start to look at a hardware or software problem related to your broadband. Can you replace the modem / NIC card?
    Do you have the latest drivers for these hardware items?

    Siggy: You're right about that. There isn't a "blank.htm" file there normally and if IE displays a blank homepage it uses about:blank so I'd say open that htm file in notepad and see what is in it (and delete the entry itself with HJT).
