hal.dll file corrupt in WinXP home

Hello there,

I am working on my sister's computer right now, and I get the error or the Hal.dll file missing or corrupt. I attempted to use the recovery install to run this command which would, hopefully, fix the issue.

Attrib -h -r -s C:\Boot.ini
Del C:\boot.ini
Bootcfg /rebuild
fixboot

before I could even do this though, I needed an admin password. My sister bought this computer 4 years ago, it's a Dell Inspiron 4100 and she doesn't recall setting an admin password. I can't run the program, and all these downloads on the internet require I be on the PC with the issue. I can't boot that system at all though, not even in safe mode for other reasons.

Any help would be awesome, thanks.

Alex

Try leaving the password area blank.

If that doesn't do it, Dell tech support might tell you what the default password is that they shipped the unit with. It could be something as corny as "user" or "customer".

    Good luck. :)
