Sun Microsystems has announced a server chip that will contain an astounding eight cores on one chip.
The UltraSparc T1 processor, code-named Niagara, has eight computing engines on a single chip, with each core capable of handling up to four tasks at once, Sun said Monday. It expects to ship systems based on the processor by the end of the year.

The new chip uses about 70 watts of power on average, significantly less than the 150 watts to 200 watts required by server chips from Intel Corp. or International Business Machines Corp., Sun claimed.

This "core battle" is going to get worse than the "more megahurtz OMFG" thing.

I keep looking at the power consumption drop, and it makes me smile. That's the battle I'm interested in.

hmm..how about we say screw the cores, screw the megahurtz, and screw the hyper threaded doolywhoppers. on the front of that box. i want to see the gigaflops, the tflops, and other specs that actually denote performance damnit. thats like a p3 600 would be smoked by an athalon doing 600 (if they had one)
