CNET reports that Microsoft has announced that all future server product releases will require 64-bit CPUs.
By late next year, Microsoft expects to deliver Exchange 12, which will run only on x86-compatible 64-bit servers, said Bob Kelly, general manager of infrastructure server marketing at Microsoft.

Kelly said 64-bit chips will make the greatest impact on the performance of applications such as Exchange and its SQL Server database.

"IT professionals will be able to consolidate the total number of servers running 64-bit (processors) and users will be able to have bigger mailbox size," he said.

Aw, I got excited when I thought it read "Microsoft to require 64-bit drivers". It would be a nice idea for MS to require a 64-bit version (in addition to 32-bit) of every new driver that gets WHQL.

Now that would be really cool!

Not so cool for the smaller company with legacy hardware. No upgrade path from Exchange 2003 without a hardware upgrade as well as a software upgrade. That isn't cheap!
