recovering files...

so my system drive got damaged the other day (must've been during the storm i'm guessing)... several file segments are deemed 'unreadable' (as stated by a disk scan)... so i'm guessing my only option is to reinstall xp pro to another hard drive...

but i'd like to be able to salvage as many of my files as possible (photography, music, etc.), since not that many file segments were noted as unreadable. so, in order to access these files after the new installation, what do i need to have done? i'm guessing i might have to use the same username and password in the fresh install in order for NTFS to grant me access to my files, being that they're inside my administrator-priviledged user's directory in 'documents & settings.'

could you smart fellows please lend a hand?

so i get home after spending $10 at the bookstore for xp pro (which, sadly, already comes with sp2) and check up on my computer. i had booter her up this morning and managed to get winamp running and was playing music from my sata drive, which i know is good. well, **** is working, albeit a tad slow than usual. however, nothing REALLY lags any more, i can get opera working, and folders open with no delay... so, it's kinda working like before... but i really have no clue why nor what happened. she was going nuts for a whole day, and now she's functioning. i don't ****ing get it. still, i'm backing up a lot of the stuff i had on that drive over to my 200 gigger, just in case.

i just really hope everything is fine and i won't have to reinstall. i had been quite worried about it. and still am. i'm afraid to reboot her now... lol. so, after spending money on something i thought i needed, the issue is resolved.

on the plus side, i now have a copy of xp pro x64 edition.

edit: i suppose it'd still be in my best interest to back everything up

i just got done backing my data up. lots of files and directories got corrupted, and a few programs will not run any more. i'm also racking up a huge load of pagefaults....

i can't do a chkdsk right now, it says the volume is in use. i suppose i'll close every program and try again. i'm very afraid to reboot the computer at this time, as it may not come back up.

I'd recommend that you run the test program from the hard drive manufacturer for the drive in question.

A couple of passes of Memtest-86 would be a good idea, too. :)

thanks for the reply profdlp, it is greatly appreciated :) i'll attempt to find a test program for the drive (it's a seagate barracuda).

    i'll give memtest-86 a try tonight.
