Best FREE Disk Defragmenter?

I havn't defraged my computer in a long time and think I probably should. I would normally use Windows built-in Disk Defragmenter but I want to know if there is a better software for doing this that is Free?

    I haven't seen any but IIRC, XP's built in defragger is based of Diskeeper.

    Sure. It does a decent job. Only thing about the newer programs is that it organizes the files but how frequently they are modified.

    If you want to do a thorough, one-time defrag, download the 30 day trial of Diskeeper Pro 9 from www.diskeeper.com. Do a boot time defrag and another manual defrag when that's done - that's as good as it gets :)

    I'm downloading the 93.9MB of Diskeeper 30 day trialware for networks. Sounds like it does wonders ;D

    BH: Diskeeper does more than prioritize programs by access... It can do folder consolidation, defragmentation of the MFT and pagefile, and defrag files that are in-use. Also, it's much, MUCH faster than the built in defrag. The built in MS defrag is a lite form of Diskeeper 6. It does a very basic job.

    Prime, I forgot to ask but what is the difference between the following two, if any?

    Diskeeper 9 Home/Pro Edition - 15 days Trialware
    Diskeeper 9 for Networks - 30 days trialware

    I've downloaded the 30 day trial since thats what you said but i'm not sure about the Network part.

    Network is when you need to defrag computers that are on a network. I believe you can do it remotely with program. Use the Home/Pro version.

    Diskeeper 9 for Networks doesn't seem to work. Got the following notice twice.

    Going to download the Home version :)

    EDIT: Just read the readme file and the network version is only compatible with XP pro :(

    I use Diskeeper Lite 7 and find it does a good, quick job of defragmenting. You do not get the rest of the fruit, but it does me fine :).

    From the manufacturer;
    Diskeeper Lite is a manual-only version that will introduce you to this powerful system maintenance tool.

    IMPORTANT:
    Diskeeper Lite includes the same advanced defragmentation technology used in Diskeeper full version. This program is the fastest defragmentation program ever built. Full version Diskeeper has 5 priority levels and can be easily set to run transparently in the background, even during peak production times. However, Diskeeper Lite is locked at the "normal" system priority level and may slow other online operations.

    Once installed it becomes the default tool.

    Nagware. It constantly pops up and reminds you of the benefits of buying the full version.

    It does the job, but much slower, and not as thoroughly as the full version. You can't do a boot defrag, or MFT or pagefile. But it's better than the built in defragger.

    I don't know... One of my customers uses it on all his PCs and it pops up every time fragmentation gets over 10%, which is quite often.

    I used Diskeeper 9 Home Version and here are the results from defragging.

    I'd put in another vote for Diskeeper, the full version. I like its scheduling features and have set it to run in the background on a daily basis. Does a neat job and doesnt hog resources. My drive gets fragmented pretty fast and i think its great for daily defrag. I feel that if you defrag regularly it hardly takes long each time u do it.

    another vote for diskeeper defrag over here. my favorite feature is the boot-time defrag...:type:

    Am I the only one who doesn't see any difference after defragging?!

    Upon the reccomendation of a friend i tried diskkeeper (cant remember which version- the latest at the time- which was about 6months ago)

    And noticed no diff what so ever, same using the windows defrag too (but i guess if i didnt notice a professional one i wouldnt notice the basic xp one)

    what % fragmentation should i be going for when its finished doing its thing?

    I would assume it would be more noticeable on large harddrives. Like you I saw no appreciable difference when I defragged my 40Gig drive. When it came to defragging 200Gigs I noticed the difference!
