possible virus?

I keep on getting this email saying something about an error and then it says this
"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
SMTP_Error []
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
The full mail-text and header is attached!"
theres a file attatched to it, but im afraid to open it because it could be a virus or something. The address that it was sent from is not an official name, just a regular user. I use adelphia's mail service.
im not really good with the whole virus stuff, so i dont know how to approach this. I have norton antivirus 2004, and some other adware stuff installed. Is there any way i can scan it before opening it?
