vcodec

got it from vcodec.com
searched and could only find one site that was in english
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1698131.php
is very vague and doesnt tell you what to delete specifically

i cleared history, cookies, cache, etc on firefox
ran adaware and nothing
hjt log doesn't show anything suspicious

- if i open up internet explorer, the page automatically goes to updateyoursystem.com with the heading reading "Security Center"
- the virus is causing pop ups (through internet explorer, not firefox)
- it is also setting off my avast antivirus everytime i turn on my computer
- a yellow flashing triangle will appear on my notification area (bottom right where the clock is) saying that there's a spyware endorsement on my computer. if i click on it, it takes me to spyaxe's website with internet explorer

i dont know what to do and pop ups are bothering me. every once in a while i'll get one w/ boobies

In order to clean your PC from infections related to Spyware Axe product, please follow the instructions below:

    1) Save Uninstallers.zip from http://www.spyaxe.com/uninstall/uninstallers.zip to your desktop or HDD.

    2) Extract 2 files "illegal_adv_uninstall1.exe" and "illegal_adv_uninstall2.exe" to your desktop or your HDD using WinZip.

    3) Execute both of them one by one by double-clicking with your mouse.
*note: they will run instantly in the background. So don't be concerned when you don't visually see anything happening.

    4) Reboot your PC

    5) Your PC is now clean from the infections.

If you haven't done so already, delete the entire spyaxe directory from your drive under program files.

Reboot and post a new HJT log :)

    How are things?
  • edited November 2005
it was good for about two days.. then nvctrl.exe and mssearchnet.exe came back (causing popups through IE)

i tried deleting them in normal mode but it would not let me because they are running. if i end these process in windows task manager, they come back immediately. because of this, i cannot delete them in normal mode

i ran HJT in safe mode and these processes did not show up (seems like they only run in normal mode). anyways i deleted them from my system32 folder, rebooted in normal mode and eveything was good for about a day.

    today it's back. nvctrl.exe and mssearchnet.exe

i don't want to startup in safe mode to delete these files everyday. if somebody could helpe me with a more permanenet solution, it would be much appreciated :)

[edit] flashing yellow triangle is back.. takes me to "spytrooper"'s website

here's my most current hjt log (w/ nvctrl and mssearchnet running  )

    Download Killbox from here.

End the processes for mssearchnet.exe and nvctrl.exe

Open killbox and paste in C:\WINDOWS\System32\mssearchnet.exe

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, click the option *Delete on Reboot*

Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will ask you to reboot now, click NO.

Now, copy and paste this in the box:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvctrl.exe

When it asks you to reboot, click YES

Post a new HJT log :)

i cannot end processes mssearchnet.exe and nvctrl.exe in normal mode. with task manager or with hjt. when i do, it comes back immediately

killbox is not working for me

when i delete mssearchnet.exe and nvctrl.exe in safe mode, it will come back the next day or later in the same day.

flashing yellow triangle is back and spyaxe keeps installing itself on my computer. the uninstaller zip you have provided me with doesn't work anymore

i also have wuamk0032.exe in my system32 folder. i removed yesterday, came back today, and i removed it again earlier today.

here's my hjt log. nvctrl and mssearchnet are not running (deleted them in safe mode but they will come back ), i uninstalled spyaxe again, and yellow flashing triangle is still there. i'm about to reformat my computer. this is annoying

There are few things still left to do...

    Step 1

You need to update your computer. Go to Windows Update and download ALL crtitcal updates. Especially download Service Pack 1a BUT not Service Pack 2 - just yet

If you can't find Service Pack 1a from Windows Update, then download it from the link below

    Microsoft Service Pack 1a

    Step 2

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and instal one of these excellent (and free) products: Zone Alarm or Sygate
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download both to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

    Step 3

You still have a trace of SmitFraud on your computer which we will clean after you have done Steps 1 & 2 :)

After, you have done Steps 1 & 2, please post a new HJT log :)

I still don't see a Firewall unless it is disabled. You should have a Firewall enabled at all times. Look back at Step 2 in my previous post :)
    -

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup
    Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click 'Fix Checked':

    ===================================================
    O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {724510c3-f3c8-4fb7-879a-d99f29008a2f} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpC6E1.tmp
    ===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

    Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let us know if any problems persist.
