Red Alert 2 Performance Question

I've been playing red alert 2: yuri's revenge with my roomates(one instance) and then again with my brother at home(2nd instance). I'm wondering what the limiting factor is while playing this game, because when there are a lot of units it gets pretty laggy both at my apartment and home. I'd assume it's the video card, but I didn't know how much the processor or ram contributes. Sometimes it also seems like it takes longer on my computer to actually load the game then on others, even though mine is faster. I've listed the approximate setups below, if anyone can fill me in i'd appreciate it.

(Mine)
barton 2500
1 gig ram
ati 9800 pro

(roomate 1)
pentium 4 1.8ghz
512 ram
geforce 4 32mb(i think)

(roomate 2)
celeron 2 ghz
512 ram
intel onboard video

(my brother - laptop)
athlon 64 3200
768 ram
geforce 4 m440

Download a no cdcrack (The game seaks the cdrom aproxamatly ever 5 seconds and causes lag unless your on windows 98 then it tends not to be noticeable).

Also, the game's pathfinding engine is pretty poor. When you're playing with other people you tend to get many many more units ont the battlefield than when you're playing against the computer, so the game can really lag at times.

Make sure you're using the latest patches of course. I love Yuri's, one of my favourite games

    grayfox: thanks for the suggestion

cyrix: what is the best way to speed up game play when there are a lot of units, that's kind of my main question? which component(s) are holding us back the most?

I've played this game with a Radeon 7000, 256MB and a 1.2GHz T-Bird without a problem. However I DID begin to have some similar problems (on other games) when I added a memory card that wasn't the same size and rating as the other. You might want to give memtest a shot- but I doubt that is it since it happens on two (yes?) machines. I'm thinking that because that is the resource CCRA grabs more of when more units begin to pile on. You might want to see if there is any page faulting going on too. I'll see if I can find the game book because there may be something in the game settings.
