Desktop/start menu won't load

edited December 2005 in Hardware
I have a Dell Dimension 4600 w/ Windows XP Professional Edition.

When I turn on my PC, all that loads is my desktop background. No start menu, no desktop icons. I can't access my start menu through any means, when I go to the CTRL+ALT+DEL menu it tells me that explorer.exe is running.

I tried to boot up in safe mode and had the same problem. Nothing shows up.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I'm somewhat technologically retarded, so the more detailed the explanation the better.

Thanks, Jessica

    Jessica,

    A couple of thoughts-

My suspicion is that there are some viruses that can do this- F-Nimda is one- I would suggest you go to the SVT forum

    Here.

If can you get into Safe Mode (press F8 right after the Power On Self Test- POST- and select from the menu), your chances are good to get it cleared up if you follow the procedures in the Announcement threads and follow the directions you will be given when you post your Hijack This log.

    Hope that helps
