Not too long ago after MS announced they were dropping WinFS production on Vista, they announced they were going to patch it into XP. Anyone have any updates on the situation? Seems like it's been pretty quiet on that front for awhile now.

Last I heard they're going to release it as the core of their next generation OS, Blackcomb. I haven't heard any talk about patching it into XP in a while, but when WinFS is ready, I think there is still talk of making it an add-on to Vista.

I've heard that WinXP will have one more Service Pack and that may contain the WinFS. The release of SP3 will occur AFTER Vista is rolled out and fixed.

Another XP service pack would make a lot of sense. The list of technologies that Microsoft plans on backporting from Vista to XP is pretty large, and would make a good foundation for a new service pack:
    Windows Presentation Foundation
    Windows Communication Foundation
WinFX (not to be confused with WinFS)

They're saying Late '06. There is a beta available of it, if you're daring enough to try a beta version of your file system...

I wonder if I could just WinFS a storage drive (extra hd)? As long as it doesn't have any effect on my main drives and storage I wouldn't be opposed.

Supposed to be a little more friendly to the ways in which PCs are used now - speeds up file access a bit with a new form of indexing.

    That's the theory, anyway.

The entire file system is a database.... everything is suppose to be faster.

I was able to grab that, but like I said, it's all a little dated.
