Memory reporting accuracy in Task Manager?

I've got Windows XP Home on my main system, which is a 2500 Barton @ 2.2 Ghz, NF7 Version 2 MB, and 768 MB of PC3200 memory.

Sometimes when I look at Task Manager, I notice that the numbers reported for the memory taken by each process don't seem to add up to the total amount of memory being used, which is also reported in Task Manager.

Is it not that accurate, or is some memory being used but not reported, or do the numbers really work out to be right?

Right now, with 36 processes running, only 7 of them are using more than 10,000 KB of memory each. Those 7 total up to about 270,000 KB of memory. The rest total up to @ 132,000 KB, for a total used of @ 402,000 KB. And Task Manager says that out of 785,904 KB total, only 222,000 KB is available right now.

Where's the other 161,000 KB of memory being used at?
