CS:S Problems

SpywareShooterSpywareShooter 127.0.0.1
edited January 2006 in Gaming
I haven't played CounterStrike:Source in about a week, and now when I go to play it it gives me the attached error. It worked fine before, but every time now when it gets to the main menu screen it gives me this, and retrying, and logging out/back into Steam does nothing. Can anyone give me some tips on this?

If it's required the computer's specs are in my signature (Computer 1).

Also, I started overclocking my video card recently and this is the first time I've rebooted (the computer automatically rebooted after installing Windows Updates) since then. I only overclocked 10MHz, since I didn't want to push it and knew I could go more in the future, but could this be the problem?

I know I shouldn't be bumping, but it's been a week... I brought the video card back down to stock speeds and it's still giving me the error. I also uninstalled and reinstalled CS and it didn't help.

    Is your cpu overclocked ?

The source engine is great at detecting an unstable overclock and/or an unstable system. (Its faster then prime 95 for me)

Nope, it was an OEM computer so I can't overclock the CPU.

I used to get that error all the time. I get a similar one every day in GAIM. I just hit cancel, and it works fine.

There is no "cancel" on this error.

Grayfox, I will report back with the temps in a few minutes.

    Idle:
    Board: 33ºC
    CPU: 35ºC

    Full load (Folding):
    Board: 34ºC
    CPU: 55ºC

    It's the AMD.

Close folding before you play it folding tends to mess with games.

I tried pausing and exiting folding, no help.

I'll try Memtest but I don't think it's a memory error because everything else runs fine.

How long should I let Memtest run for? I let it do one pass (a little more than an hour) and I had 0 errors. Should I run it overnight?

Nope, 1 pass with zero errors is enough to tell you it's not the memory.

    Might be your video card.

It's the software. The Source engine has the tendency to spit out memory errors just like what you're seeing every so often. It does this on everyone's machine assuming they play it enough to come across it. People have found that lowering or eliminating their overclocks helps it happen less often, but you can’t get rid of the error all together.

I’ve found that warm rebooting the machine after receiving the error helps lessen the change of it coming up again for a while, but you’ll see it again eventually.

The only time Ive encountered a problem with it is in garrys mod when I run out of ram and it switches to paging file.. but hes running this with a gig of ram and css uses alot less ram.

Well I've uninstalled/reinstalled it three times, so I'm thinking it's more than the software. The machine isn't overclocked so I can't bring the OC down... how can I test my video card?
  • edited December 2005
It's a bug in the software, not a mis install.

In my expirence, the more your computer access the hard drive, the better the chance you'll get the error. I have a gig of RAM my self, but I still get the error at times, and only while the computer is loading a level, or loading a bunch of textures from the HDD for the first time.

Well this isn't just a once-in-a-while thing... it has been happening every time I try to load the game for over a week.

I got that about twice out of the entire 1.6

Did you try running other games under steam?

I used to see this error frequently at work, and it was almost always due to McAfee V-sheild causing some kind of conflict. Try to disable any anti-virus applications that you have and try again. Also, you could try to exit other open applications to see if there is something else conflicting with source.

I don't think it is your graphics card, but you could try to install the latest drivers as well.

    Good luck

how are you launching the game. Ive only ever seen this problem when launching it from the steam menu. If I launch the game from the actual CSS icon, I never had a problem.

The only other games I have are Half-Life 2 and Deathmatch, which never worked (the screen goes black, resolution changes, and the game permanently minimizes), so I can't try any other games. I have tried ti with Norton disabled, but it still gives me the error. Where do I find the CS:S icon?

You're playing CS, yet the error seems to refer to Half-Life 2 (hl2.exe). Not being a player of either game, is it possible that there is a game profile for Steam which is confusing the two?

Mine appears on install. When I get home tonight I can tell you the exe you need. I just double click my CSS icon, it launches steam, logs me in auto then auto starts CSS. Ive gotten your error before but only when I launch steam, and use their menu system to launch the game.

I have also read that loosening your memory timings will fix the issue as well.

CSS runs on the hl2.exe which is really the just the engine.

When I try to run it from hl2.exe I get one of Microsoft's imfamous "This program has caused an error" messages, but this has also been happening since I first installed.

I got the game working again. I ended up uninstalling Steam and then reinstalling everything from scratch and it works now.

    your short cut to css

    "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 240

    target folder

    "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\"

IF you have it installed in the default location.
