Are you logged on with an account that has adminstrative rights?

yeah...i am logged in as administrator...i recently removed all other users. my laptop was on a network at work and there were 6 or 7 users that i removed.

when i open up control panel/user accounts

then properties: it says in description

Built-in account for administering the computer/domain

not sure if that helps or not...

    thanks

    so odd profdlp

everything on those pages fit exactly, even down to the registry subkey in the example being exactly the same...

but when i went to correct permissions for the subkey, the boxes they recommended me to check already were...just to make sure i added permission to the only other "user" on the system...

still it failed again upon reinstall...

so now i deleted the final extra user and i am only left with administrator..the one i log on as always anyway...

i will try one more time...

thanks for the help..i thought for sure we had it licked

Make sure you have NO mapped drives enabled.

Remove any CD emulation software (daemon tools, Alcohol 120%).

Those are the two main problems with SP2 upgrades ;)

A mapped drive is when you make a drive on a remote computer appear as a local drive letter. If you're not networked you shouldn't have to worry about that.

CD emulation allows you to copy a CD to your hard drive, then run it as though it were a virtual cdrom.

Are you trying to install SP2 via Windows Update? It may take a while depending on your Internet speed, but downloading the whole ball of wax and installing it locally might be worth a shot.

Check here from some good info on how to fix various "Access Denied" types of errors. Do it at your own risk though ;)

This issue normally happens with a well known key. Is it a legal key you use? Just tell the 4 first letters of it and i can tell you if it will work or not.
