homepage set to yoursystemupdate.com

Hi all, thanks in advance for taking the time to help me, make suggestions, anything would be appreciated. No matter what I set my homepage to in IE internet options, it reverts to yoursystemupdate.com. That page tells me that I have spyware on my computer, and trys to frighten me into purchasing their anti-spyware software, mostly SpyAxe. It even goes so far as to start Spyaxe running on my computer, tells me it has found numerous malicious spyware programs, then prompts me to purchase Spyaxe so it can delete them. I also have an annoying bubble that pops up almost continually from the windows taskbar that says "Your computer is infected...yada yada...click here to protect your computer from spyware." If I click there it again brings up a Spyaxe window that is scanning my computer for spyware. I have downloaded and run the most recent updates form Adaware SE. I will post a Hijack this log here. Any advice you could give would be most appreciated, thanks.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup
    Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

    ===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

    Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

OK, thanks for the help. Seems to be cleared up for the moment, only setback with following the instructions was that Panda Scan doesn't seem to have a box for "Autoclean." Instead it tells me it found malicious software, and has a link I can click for advice on Disinfecting. When I do that, it offers up a purchase of their product or a free trial. I downloaded the free trial, but it tells me it won't be able to install unless I uninstall AVG. I am not trying to get something for nothing here, I would pay for Panda if necessary, but I hate to do that if the AVG I already have will suffice. In the meantime, here are the logs from smitrem, Hijackthis, and Panda. Panda did claim to find like 13 Spyware things, (which are shown in the log I am sure), and so far I guess they are not removed since I was unable to install the free Trial version.

I assume I could delete the malicious files found by Panda Scan manually, although I am not sure I know how to get to the one that is in Windows registry. Thanks again for your time and help.

Cool. Your log is clean :). Yep, you need to just clean up what Panda found and you should be ok.
Without a reference to the one in the registry, it is impossible to say what to remove there.

Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

Got it, done all that, should be good...thanks.

One last question: When I selected show all hidden files and looked at C:/Windows, the first 65 folders listed in C:/Windows are all a variant of the same name, $NTUnistallKB82874 where the last 5 digits are different on each folder. I only mention it because it is something I have not seen before. I am running Windows XP, maybe it is normal and just the first time I have had the hidden files checked to where I can see them? It just seemed to be an odd list of folders, and so many of them. They all seem to have a folder in them that is called spunist, and within that folder various of files, but many of them have a Microsoft Service Pack Unistall of some sort. Are they different sevice pack updates I have installed?

Yes, they are all legitimate files and nothing to be concerned about :). Just revert back to hidden files again now.
