I bought another tivo for free after-rebate after price matching and sending in the rebate. These deals come up a lot. Keep in mind, you can easily replace that 40GB hard drive with a larger one. I have a 120GB in my 40Hr model and I never have space issues. :)

How does Tivo work? Would I be able to use it in place of my digital cable receiver, for instance?

No, it cannot replace your digital cable receiver. basically, the cable runs out of your wall, into the digital cable receiver, out of the digital cable receiver and into the TiVo the TiVo records the video to the hard drive. You then hook your TV's video-in up to one of the TiVo outputs. So the TiVo basically acts like the middle man between your cable box (if you have one) and your TV. Everyone says it, but TiVo really does change the way you watch TV. I could never go back to regular TV. It's so nice to be able to pause and rewind things, skip through the commercials, and records a bunch of stuff to watch on your schedule. It uses a regular IDE hard drive, so if you have one laying around you should be able to put it in your TiVo with a bit of work (replacing TiVo's HD is a hack, not PnP).
