Data Recovery Software

What's the best software for recovering data from NTFS partitions no longer recognizable in Windows? I used a program called Get Data Back which recovered most of the files. However, only a few text files were actually readable. Everything else was corrupt. Are there any other programs I could try before taking the drive to a specialist?

Details:
I have a hard drive with primary and secondary partitions which I recently tried to merge using Partition Magic 8. During the process it gave this error: "Error 1520 External Attribute Header Mismatch". When I rebooted into Windows (on the primary partion I was merging into) the partition was no longer recognized by Windows. When I started Partition Magic it gave me an error about my drive's geometry, basically saying the partitions weren't created right.

I have the feeling I'm S.O.L. but any help is greatly appreciated.

TestDisk is wonderful. Free, too. :)

Thanks! TestDisk is exactly what I need. I've already used PhotoRec, the accompanying program, to recover some photos while I try to figure out how in the hell to use TestDisk. It's a pretty powerful program and I want to make sure I know exactly what's wrong with my disk before I start changing things.
