Two viruses--Redir.exploit & Trojan Apropos--HJT Log included

Hello,

I would love some help in removing some viruses from my hard drive.

I've picked up 2 viruses using either Symantec & McAfee scans.

The first is called "Redir.exploit" and when Symantec runs on my computer, I close the program and it keeps starting up again. I have to shut down my computer in order for Symantec to stop running.

The second is newer and is called Apropos. It's labelled as a Trojan virus.

Both viruses are found in multiple places, and after I quarantine them they keep appearing on my C Drive.

I've run CWShredder, SpyBot, and AdAware. I usually have to clean up 2 or 3 dozen spyware &/or adware problems but I never have anything that CWShredder finds.

On what I guess is a related note, I have Internet Explorer popups that are immune to Pop-Up Stopper. They are usually (but not always) related to the sites I visit. For example, I'll get Registry Cleanup popups when I come to this site, but I also get random popups like Casino Gambling.

    Hey LaRock,

    Do you know the locations of the two viruses?

    Try this to fix Apropos

    You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

    Please download AproposFix from here:
    http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

    Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

    Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    1) Restart your computer
    2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.


    Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

    When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

    Thanks, Trogan_1000!

    I'm having a problem when I start in safe mode--my sign in isn't available. The only two sign ins that I see are "administrator" and my wife's sign in. Since the aproposfix file is on my account I can't access it in safe mode.

    Can I move aproposfix to my wife's account and then go back to safe mode or do I have to have my account accessible since that's when I notice the viruses on my scans?

    Either move or Redownload the AproposFix to your Wife's account...it will work fine :)


    Just so I know, do you know the location of the viruses?

    No, I just noticed that my scans detected them. As fas as I know they are quarantined, but I could be wrong because they do keep coming up.

    I'll try the safe mode aproposfix again. Thanks! :)

    Good timing, I just got another message about the Apropos. Here is the location:

    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP64

    It said that the file was deleted and it recommended that I do another virus scan which I'm running right now.

    I'm glad to hear that my log looks clean...hopefully this location can help you with the Apropros Trojan.

    What about the other message that you mentioned...Redir.exploit? Has it gone?

    The Redir.Exploit hasn't come back up. The only time I get a notice for it is when Symantec pops up and tells me that it's found it. This usually happens once every few weeks.

    The only time I've received a message about Apropos is when McAfee runs. I'll get a notification (it started happening about 3-4 times in the past day or two) that the virus has been found and the location has been deleted, and it recommends a new scan of my hard drive.

    Thanks so much for your help! I hope that they are both gone for good. If for some reason they come back I'll repost here and let you know.

    It is NOT a good idea to have TWO Anti-Virus scanners on one computer. I suggest you remove one of them and keep the one you prefer. The same rules apply for Firewalls. Having two or more can cause your computer to have all sorts of problems. :)


    The Apropos is being found in the System Restore Directory. To clear System Restore, follow the instructions Here. Don't forget to create a New Restore Point.
    Note: All Previous Restore Points Will Be Lost.


    You shouldn't get any more messages after that for Apropos...Hopefully :)

    Do you recommend I keep Symantec or McAfee? I'll delete the one that isn't as good as the other.

    So far I haven't seen another virus notice. I'm about to clear the system restore with the link you provided.

    I would keep the Anti-Virus which is the latest in terms of the year it was made.

    You may want to look at Short-Media's Utilties Poll 2005: Anti-Virus thread. As you can see AVG has the largest vote. If you want, you can remove McAfee and Symantec and download AVG from Here. It is a Free Anti-Virus that works really well...

    I got the AVG program. Thanks for letting me know that having mroe than one scan program can be harmful.

    And thanks for all of your help! So far, I haven't seen any more virus notices. Hopefully it will stay clean.

    Here is the "All Clean" speech :D


    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

    Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables.

    Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster 3.4

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.


    Clear your Temp folders.
    Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
    Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
    Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
    delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

    Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    For XP users.
    After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
    To flush the XP system Restore Points.

    Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

    When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
    On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

    Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

    Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

    Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
