Wininet.dll?

edited December 2005 in Science & Tech
anyone know what this program is supposed to do?
I am trying to use a free printing program from HP that was recommended to me. It is downloadable at HPs web site. Everytime I try to run that program I get a message that the executable (.exe.) for that program is "linked to the missing file WININET.DLL". I tried to download the program from a site and copy it to my system folder but that didn't work. I also read some posts about reloading microsoft windows explorer. I run firefox but I tried to anyway. I could not find a Delete option under control pannel/add/delete programs that would allow me to delete windows explorer and reload it. I am running win 98.
Thanks.

Plenty of info at this page. Note the warning about a possible Trojan hijacking the file. If your problem persists you may want to pay a visit to our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum - make sure you read the instructions there first. :)

Unzip the attached file and put it in C:\WINDOWS\system32

I tried to load the program into the system 32 folder. that didn't work. I will check out the other resources you listed. If all else fails should I reload windows? Can I load another version of windows such as XP on a five year old computer?
    thanks

Try putting WININET.DLL into the same folder where the program that you are trying to run resides.

Just in case, did you reboot after copying the file?

I wouldn't recommend reinstalling any previous versions of Windows (like your Win98) over themselves. Backing up your data (to a separate partition or to CD) and formatting the drive will likely save you even more grief in the long run. I'd try this as the next step:

...use the System File Checker tool to check for damaged or replaced system files. To start System File Checker, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, click System Information, and then click System File Checker on the Tools menu.

For information about how to use System File Checker to extract a file, please see the "System File Checker Tool" section of the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

That depends on the specs. What speed and type of CPU do you have, how big is your Hard Drive, and how much RAM do you have?
